In our case, I think DS being big helped. DS was almost 10lb when he was born and about 20lb at 8 months when he started walking. I think him being bigger helped him learn to walk earlier. Maybe because he's got huge feet or is stronger, not sure but I think it helped.

DS is 26lbs at 8 months, and our pedi warned us that he might be late to walk because of his size...something about his muscles not being ready to support so much weight yet! He's crawling all over and pulling up, so I don't think he'll be too far behind with walking. We'll see!
The doc told me that big babies tend to be slower in doing physical things, like crawling, walking. Who knows? My DS is big (off the charts for both height and weight) and didn't roll over until last week (almost 6 months). We'll see!
DD is a big girl. She's 23 lbs and 30 inches. She is turning 9 month tomorrow. She pulled up last week, has been cruising, holding on the the coffee table. She was crawling commando style for about 1 month but recently has been crawling the "regular" style too. She wants to spend most of her time walking though. Sadly, that means mom and dad (who's 6'3") have to lean down a lot. Our aching backs!
DD was, until 12 months and lactose issues, in the 95th % for both height and weight.
She took her first steps at 10 months and was full out walking by 11 months. Not a late walker at all!

Re: Have a big baby? When did s/he start walking?
DS#1, my 95th %tile baby walked at 9mths
DD, my 50th %tile baby walked at 12mths
DS#2, my 2nd %tile baby walked at 10mths
I don't agree with your friends theory

I don't think weight makes a difference.
#1 walked on his first birthday, and he was over 25 pounds. Heck, he was 20 pounds at 4 months.
Me with my littlest.
I don't think weight matters.
