Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Have a big baby? When did s/he start walking?

A friend of mine has a theory that big babies are slower to walk.  What do you think?  What was your experience?

Re: Have a big baby? When did s/he start walking?

  • In our case, I think DS being big helped. DS was almost 10lb when he was born and about 20lb at 8 months when he started walking. I think him being bigger helped him learn to walk earlier. Maybe because he's got huge feet or is stronger, not sure but I think it helped.

  • my DS is 20 lbs and is just starting to figure out crawling, just has not got it down just yet ... we shall see!
  • DS#1, my 95th %tile baby walked at 9mths

DD, my 50th %tile baby walked at 12mths

    DS#2, my 2nd %tile baby walked at 10mths

I don't agree with your friends theory ;)

  • Ben has always been tall and he was consistently in the 90-95th percentile for weight up until his 9 month appt.  He was walking at 11 months.
  • DS is 26lbs at 8 months, and our pedi warned us that he might be late to walk because of his size...something about his muscles not being ready to support so much weight yet!  He's crawling all over and pulling up, so I don't think he'll be too far behind with walking.  We'll see!
  • The doc told me that big babies tend to be slower in doing physical things, like crawling, walking. Who knows? My DS is big (off the charts for both height and weight) and didn't roll over until last week (almost 6 months). We'll see!
  • I don't think weight makes a difference.

#1 walked on his first birthday, and he was over 25 pounds.  Heck, he was 20 pounds at 4 months.

  • I don't think weight matters.

DD is a big girl. She's 23 lbs and 30 inches. She is turning 9 month tomorrow. She pulled up last week, has been cruising, holding on the the coffee table. She was crawling commando style for about 1 month but recently has been crawling the "regular" style too. She wants to spend most of her time walking  though. Sadly, that means mom and dad (who's 6'3") have to lean down a lot. Our aching backs!

  • What do you classify as a big baby?

DD was, until 12 months and lactose issues, in the 95th % for both height and weight.

She took her first steps at 10 months and was full out walking by 11 months. Not a late walker at all!
