Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Weaning SUCKS!!! Vent

DS has proven to be as determined and stuborn as his mother...dear Lord I am sure I had it coming but I had no idea stuborness would show up so early.

I have been putting forth effort to wean DS since he was 12mo.  to no avail, but now he eats lots of solids very regularly (he wasn't really doing that great until he was 12mo.).  He is refusing to use his sippy cup around me, and I am the one that got him to start using it in the first place!!!

He likes cows milk, but is willing to hold out for hours for nursing, no exageration, hours.  He doesn't nurse long, most times it is for five minutes but nothing will pacify him but nursing.  He has never really been a fan of pacifiers, he has no interest what so ever in bottles.  I am at a loss.  He does just fine when I am at work but whenever I am home for a full day all hell breaks out.  His Dr. says that this is my best window to wean him, before he is 15mo. and wants him to gain more weight between his 12mo. and 15mo. appointment.  I love and adore my son, I have enjoyed being so successful being a EBF mom, but dear lord we need to have DS off the boob so I can get pregnant again!!!  LOL, thanks for letting me vent. :-)

  • I can sympathize -- it's harder than I thought it would be to let her wean at her own pace. Did your doctor say why before 15 months was the best window? DD is 16 months now, so I'm curious.?

  • Oh my, you need to leave him w/DH for a long weekend... that is my only suggestion!

  • I'm so sorry this has been so hard.  I agree w/a pp that you need to leave him for a weekend- go visit a girlfriend or something- and no more nursing when you get back.  Sounds like cold turkey is the only thing that is going to work because as long as you keep 'giving in' (I don't mean that to sound like it's a bad thing) he's going to continue to fight until you let him nurse.  It's wonderful you have nursed him this long but clearly you are ready to be done & know this- even if it SUCKS to get him off the boob it will happen & he will not remember this.  Best of luck.
  • LOL!  This was our situation.  I didn't seek weening until she was 13 mo and had her off in 1.5 weeks.  Best of luck!  It is hard, but stick to your guns and he will adjust!
  • I am totally in the same boat!!  If I am out and about all day he doesn't want to nurse, but if we are home he is pretty demanding.  This last week I cut out ALL daytime nursing.  I am only nursing in the AM/PM now.  Everytime he starts throwing a fit for the boobs I distract him by taking him outside and offering him a snack w/ milk in a sippy.  It is working so far ***knocks on wood***.  In fact, ever since I cut the day nursings he is now taking a solid 3 hour nap (AND sleeping 11 hours a night!)

GL - I hope that helps a little.

  • I am feeling your pain.  I am trying to wean dd.  We were doing great (during the day), she was ok w/ taking the bottle of whole milk.  Then she got sick.  now she's like your ds.  she will hold out until I get home from work and then all she wants to do is nurse.  she will also nurse all night sometimes...  geez.  it's wearing me out.  she's so stubborn and will throw a huge fit until I give in and let her nurse.
  • Dry up.  I dried up at 11 months.  I would try and nurse dd, but we would have to offer her a bottle of formula afterwards to make sure she had enough milk in her.  After she realized that nursing off of me was pointless, she was done with me.

I'm so jealous that all you ladies could go that long.  I was going nuts trying to make it to 11 months!

  • Good luck!  I was very lucky- although DD was a "Moobie (her word for nursing) Monster" weaning was smooth.  I just cut out 1 session at a time, every few days, and made sure we were occupied whenever the she would normally nurse (ie. when cutting out mid morning nursing, we always had a quick snack and then went out to the store or for a walk).FWIW- I got pg while BF 8-10 times a day- twice.

  • I'm sorry you're so frustrated.

Any particular reason why your pedi is encouraging weaning before 15 mos? I'm just curious because, like a PP, my DD is 16 mos and still nurses at least twice a day (first thing in the AM and last thing before bed).
