Do you drink wine in front of DC?

Do you drink wine (or whatever alcohol) in front of your kids?

Re: Do you drink wine in front of DC?

  • Err, yes. We don't drink much, have had maybe 1 glass with a meal every 1-2 months. But why would we hide it from DS? We just say it is wine and its for mummys and daddys at this point. When he's older we can explain it is for adults. He's good about it. He even points to bottles in shops and says red wine is "daddy wine" and mummy wine is white. The steroptypes are spontaneous and early!

  • Yes.  I even bring my kids into the liquor store with me, and my 7 year old helps carry it out :)

  • Absolutely. I think it would be weird to hide examples of responsible drinking from them.
  • Yes.  I also drive a car, pay bills, cook dinner, and buy stuff with a credit card, and use the "potty", all things DD can't do yet :-)
  • Yep. Coffee too! LOL Ditto summerbride Smile

Shhh don't tell DS. He pays for things by cc all the time. I gave him an old wallet and an old store card I used to have (with my maiden name on it, expired in like 1996). He "uses" it everywhere!?

  • Yes.

Why, do people not do such things in front of their kids?

  • Well I wouldn't get trashed in front of my children, but I don't see anything wrong with having a glass of wine in front of them.  If anything I think it would teach them about responsible drinking when they are older.
  • LOL.  OK, I thought a while back there was some kind of post about how people thought it was bad.

For the record, I don't think it is a big deal at all, I just wondered if there were people who thought it was and what the rationale was.

  • Oh yeah!  DS asked MH last night, "Daddy, is that your beer?"

  • I sure do.
  • Yes.  I don't see a problem drinking in front of them, but we are responsible when drinking with them around.

LOL DS always asks us about our beer too.

  • Yes.  I always have.  I guess I haven't a ton recently because I was BF so I couldn't have more than about half-a-glass before DD#2 went to sleep.  Still, I never really thought twice about it.

That said - funny story about wine.  I don't know who's seen Dumbo recently, but there's a scene in there where some sort of alcohol (hard liquor from the clowns) spills into Dumbo's water.  He and the mouse halucinate and see pink elephants singing and dancing (amoung other things).  DD, of course, kept asking what they were and why Dumbo was seeing such silly things.  I told her he was dreaming but she said her dreams weren't that weird.  Well, somehow, I ended up saying if you drink too much wine or if kids drink wine, they see silly things.  Now she thinks I see pink elephants when I drink wine.  Of course, she asked if I was having wine with lunch after we finished watching it.  Embarrassed  Let's just say that was one conversation that totally got away from me.

  • As seldom as we have it lately, yes we have/do. ?If she asks, we just tell her it's a grownup drink. ?Once she asked for a taste, DH dipped his finger & let her try it - she hated it so all is well lol?
  • **gasp**  **horror** NO!

Yes, I have.  Of course, he says, "want mommy juice mommy".

  • yes - tonight, she was trying to give MORE wine to our guests.  they thought it was very funny - they thought she had a career as a waitress in her future.

she frequently gives us pretend wine and beer.  eh, whatever!
