We started solids 2 weeks ago after exclusively EBFing...so we hadn't dealt with constipation yet. Well the past couple days she's been straining a lot and just getting little bits of pasty poop out. Yikes! I'm not sure if that's normal or not for post solids poop.
Anyways, what fruits/veggies are good to get things going? We've just done oatmeal, sweet potatoes, bananas, avocado, and butternut squash (started today). Oh, and I'm making my own food...not sure how to make prunes? TIA!
Re: food to help constipation?
DD got very constipated when we switched from BM to formula at 5 months. So far solids have helped a lot- we started about 2 weeks ago and she eats a lot of sweet potatoes, oatmeal and pears. She always drinks a little juice/water combo with her solids (pedi suggested this b/c she was constipated for so long), either pear or prune juice.
Bananas are supposed to be the worst for constipation I think, so maybe try and give her more sweet potatoes/pears/prunes and avoid the bananas until the constipation clears up.
I make my own baby food too. Check out www.wholesomebabyfoood.com for making your own prunes. If your baby is that constipated I wouldn't wait till you make prunes. Buy organic prunes by Gerber or Earth's Best. The ingredients state prunes and water that's all.
My sister's LO has terrible constipation and they give her a 50/50 combo of prune juice and water. Pear and apple juice work too.
Good Luck!

Stay away from BRAT when your child is consitipated. Bananans Rice Apples and Toast. This is the diet suggested for children when they have diarrhea and upset stomachs.
Good Luck!
