Hello Moms. Well, my baby is very, I repeat very, cozy in my womb. I have an induction scheduled for Tuesday morning. They will break my water and then start pitocin. Any tips/experiences/etc to share with me?
I had been having contractions on and off for two or three days, but never at reliable intervals. I had a feeling he was coming soon, and my water broke the next morning. Unfortunately my contrax weren't regular; they gave me the option of waiting 24 hours or inducing w/pitocin. Water broke at 0600; was at hospital by 0630; started pitocin @ 0900 and the nurse elevated dosage (I can't remember if it was at timed intervals or what!).
Anyways, by 1400 I was 4-5 cm dilated, got epidural and he was born at 1805. Contractions were very painful by 4-5 cm dilated but I was still contracting by myself too. So they took the pitocin off eventually, but I can't remember when. Once I got my epidural I was fine... I'm a wuss! My entire labor was 12 hours but it didn't seem that long. GL!
I had Cytotec at 9p, Pitocin started at 6a, water broken at 8-9a, epidural at 4cm @ noon, baby was here at 4:51, but I had to push for two hours because he was face up and didn't want to come down. I progressed from 4-10cm in about 2 hours. I needed the epi to relax enough to let myself dilate.
I think the contractions hurt more if you pitocin, but up until I was 4cm, was no big deal... then they just got really intense. You'll do great.

This is how it was for me too. They got very intense out of nowhere at 4 cm. Hello epidural! LOL
My induction went really smoothly. My water broke at 4 cm right after I got the epidural. In all, it took about 24 hours after starting Pit to dilate to 10 cm. I ended up with a c-section but that was because my baby was OP, not because the induction failed.
Good luck! Do you know how effaced or dilated you are?

I don't want to scare you - but if you are thinking about going naturally, I wouldn't go naturally if you take the pitocin.
I was induced with pitocin, and had a very hard labour naturally, and after 18+ hours of very strong contractions, I gave in and had the epidural. I was induced at 6:30 (started the pitocin) - at 5:30am I had been having extremely strong contractions for 7 or 8 hours and was 3 cm dialated. By 8am I was 4cm.
I went to the hospital at 9pm with contractions but ended up being only 1cm. They induced me with pitocin and I got the epi at 12:30. I had only progressed to 2cm (yeah I'm a big wuss) but once I got the epi I went from 2cm at 1am to 10cm at 5:30 am. My body just needed to relax. I almost ended up with a c-section but that's because DS wasn't coming down and his head was sideways. Nothing to do with the pitocin.
My suggestion? Get the epi as soon as you start to get uncomfortable! They couldn't get mine in and I was having really close together contractions at that point. Its really hard to hold still when you hurt so bad.
They did the same exact thing for me...broke my water and started pitocin.
I was already having contractions, but not dilating (I was stuck at 1 cm!). Within an hour of them breaking my water and starting the pitocin, they contractions were already horrible. I asked for the epi, but they wouldn't give it to me yet. They gave me nubain...which I will NEVER get again! The nurse didn't tell me the side effects until after she gave it to me! It made me dizzy and feel out of it. It didn't help the pain at all (which she also didn't tell me until after I got it - it is just supposed to help you relax I guess).
Anyway, I was "induced" at about 9 AM and I was fully dilated at 4:30. Once I got the epi (which ended up being at about 4 cm), it was all good! And to me, getting the IV hurt more than getting the epi!
Oh, and one thing no one ever told me about labor was how many times you will have to pee! Obviously, after you get the epi, you don't get up to go to the bathroom....but I honestly can't even remember how many times I got up to go to the bathroom before then - it had to be at least 6 times!
Good luck! I know how it feels to be overdue...I just wanted the baby out and I didn't care how! It will go fine...just don't be afraid to get the epi!
I was induced for severe pre-eclampisa. They broke my water and then an hour later started me on pitocin. The contractions really were not that bad. I had a dose of stadol halfway through labor, but I had also had no sleep for two days and very little for a couple of weeks, and I was restricted to the bed and on mag-sulfate. I think if I had had some rest before hand or been able to move around a bit, I could have easily forgone the stadol.
Everyone's labor is different, so just listen to your body and take things step by step.
My water broke suddenly & unexpectedly since I had not had any contractions. When we got to the hospital they started pitocin & I labored for 18 hours with 3 hours of pushing. DS would just not drop down far enough & I ended up having a csection. Once they got in there they determined he was stuck & would probably not have dropped down on his own. I'm still really glad I tried to push & all, but I'm looking forward to a scheduled csection next child!
I was induced because of pre-eclampsia as well so they had to rush things a bit and get the baby out as fast as possible.
Thankfully I was already 3cm dilated and 75% effaced and contracting on my own.
What bothers me now is the fact that they literally started the pitocin while my OB was breaking my water. Before that I didn't have any pain at all from my "natural" contractions. Two hours later the pain was so excruciating that I almost blacked out during contractions and my BP shot up to 160/100. An hour after that they gave me an epidural (it took three tries and a ton of medicine for it to kick in) and from then on I dilated pretty fast (from 4-5 cm at the time of epidural to 10 cm within 3 hours). I pushed for 1.5 hours. My whole labor and delivery lasted from 7am to 4:38 pm.
In a nutshell, my induction was brutal, necessary, and successful.

I was induced on my due date due to elevating BP and decresed movement. I was 2-3 cm dilated and 70 % effaced before induction. Started pitocin at 8 pm, Dr. broke my water around 11:30. I got the epidural at 3:30 am at 6 cm. Getting the epidural did slow down my contractions and progress stopped. They had to change the pitocin dose for awhile before they got me contracting regularly again.
At 1 pm the next day I started pushing. Pushed for 2 1/2 hours. Dr. had a hard time telling if he was face up ( I think he was) Ended up with a c-section because forceps/vacuum couldn't be used due to me having low platelet levels. I'd say I had a successful induction because he got here safe and sound!
I can't say if pitocin contractions are worse than natural ones...but it was painful, but you expect it to be. The worst part for me was the Dr. trying to figure out what position he was in. My epidural had worn off alot and it felt like she was digging to China! She had me in tears!
Trust your gut! They started Pitocin at 8 am, broke my water at 8:30 and told me I would probably be there 12-15 hours. My son was born at 11:49am and despite my requests for an epi, I went o'natural!
I agree everyone is different, and unfortunately I was at the crappy end of the barrel. In a nutshell, with our pitocin induction, 35 hours, epidural at hour 12 because they were so bad I could barely breathe I felt. After the epidural (puking every 45 minutes until 2 hours pp) everything was painfree, but super slow still. Finally when she was born (9 lbs 6 oz) after 5.5 hours of pushing she was perfect & I was so so so exhausted. I dont blame the pitocin- just the fact that she was a whopper & I'm petite (5 ft & 110 lbs prepg) The epidural was heavensent. Next time I'll just get my epi along with the pitocin iv- i was laughing in between pushes.
Good luck! Sleep every minute you can before Tuesday! Seriously!

It HURTS.

Due to superimposed pre-e I started my induction at 0 cm using Cervadil
2:10PM- 0 cm
11:20- 2 cm
11:20- They broke my water, did epidural,
12:00- started pitocin
2:30- 4 cm
4:30- 5 cm
5:15- Decided to give me an Emergency C/S. Every time I was contracting, his heart rate would fall drastically.
