Childbirth Classes & Infant care classes

When are you doing them?  One day deal or multiple evenings?

Re: Childbirth Classes & Infant care classes

  • we are not sure i am asking my doc on monday what he?recommends.

  • we are doing a bf class and an all inclusive "after 36 weeks" class - hopefully we can knock each of them out in a day.  i don't have time to spend at classes spread out of multiple evenings
  • My doc suggested scheduling it around 30 weeks.  I found one that is a one day class - between our work schedules, it will be easier to do an all day thing than to go multiple times.
  • We are doing our childbirth classes in April, in four 2hr sessions. I will be 29 weeks when we start. I am also taking BF classes, but they said to do those a little closer to birth, so I am doing that in May. I would assume you would take infant care closer to delivery as well. They want you to keep it fresh in your mind.
  • we haven't decided between the all day saturday or the 6 week night class. I have to call between 16-18 weeks to book so we need to decide pretty soon.

  • We're doing the same thing! We are going to take a "what to expect" type of class that covers all of that fun stuff and do it all in one day. My husband and I don't have time to be doing multiple evenings, especially that close to my due date! I would much rather be using my time for some other baby stuff! I was also going to take a bfing class, but someone said it's not necessary if you've been reading a little about it. So, I am saving some money and not doing that one!
  • The ones I want to take but can never get in touch with the lady to register are multiple evening classes.
  • Good to know...we are looking at a childbirth class on May 16 9 (all day) and an infant care class with CPR, etc.  Tuesday nights April 7, 14, 21.  I hope that works out....I'm due July 10.

One of my friends signed up for a childbirth class in her 7th month, but had her son 2 months early, so she never made it!!!

  • We have 5 weeks of child care and CPR classes that meet once a week for an hour and then I'm taking a breastfeeding class one night.

  • The childbirth class that we signed up for is 2 days in a 2 week period of time, 3 1/2 hours per class.  I really want to take the infant care and bf classes too, but no one offers them anywhere close by.  As it stands, we are driving an hour one way for the childbirth classes.  DH tried to get out of it.  He says they will tell me what to do at the hospital while I am delivering anyway and we won't need the class.  UH, no DH...  Mama wants to be as prepared as possible.  Does he really want to go there?  He will lose! =)

  • our childbirth class is 4 sessions, each 2hrs - starting at around 30w.  we are also doing infant CPR and breastfeeding - each of those is 1 day, for a few hours.  we'll have all of our classes done by 35w.

our office also offers a 1 day class but i already have a bad back and was afraid that i'd get really achy being stuck in a class all day.  plus, dh seemed more interested in the 4 sessions vs. 1 session.

  • We are doing ours in a one day session in May.  9:00-4:30.

  • W/ DS, I did a Lamaze class that was broken down into six two-hour classes.  I couldn't have (a) sat through or (b) paid attention to anything longer than that.  Plus we had time to "practice" between classes.  I did a childcare class that only met once, but was three hours long, and a BFing class that met twice for two hours.

  • Our hospital offers a traditional birthing class and a birthing w/o fear class for people aiming for an unmedicated birth which is the one I'll take - it's only offered as a 2 hour/5 week course, so that's what we'll do.  I'll shoot for around 29/30 weeks.

  • I don't have anything scheduled yet but we are looking into taking a Bradley Method class. It's out of town though and it's a 12 week course, about two hours per class (once a week) so it's a lot to commit too but I do think it will be worth it.

The classes start in May I think?? I'll sign up soon, I hope... It's just one more thing on my list of things to do!

  • We are taking 4  - 3 hr classes.  We actually start next week when I am at 26 weeks.  The next class they offered wasn't until May and ended the week before I was due, so we had to take an early one.  My DH would prefer to get out of work early for four nights rather than take an entire Saturday off to sit through a day long session and honestly I don't know how I would sit there all day - not enough patience.

  • We just finished our 3rd (out of 4) childbirth class!

Our hospital offers them as either - 4 consecutive weeknights (same night each week) from 6-9pm, or a full weekend crash session - Friday night, Saturday all day, and Sunday afternoon.

DH wanted to do the weekend option, to just get it done and over with, but I just couldn't.  I get tired so easily now, and didn't want to use up an entire weekend if we had the option.  I use my weekends to relax, catch up on housework, and run my errands.

I've liked taking the class 1 night per week, it gives me time to review and "absorb" what I learned for the next week.  I can't imagine cramming all of that information into one weekend and not forgetting anything.  I guess the only negative thing I can say about taking them every Thursday is that it makes for a very long Thursday each week!

I would definitely recommend taking it this way (broken up into weekly sessions, or however your hospital does it) if possible.

  • I signed-up the other day.  We are doing multiple evenings.  My OB said that the single All-day class is very overwhelming and it's difficult to actually get all of the information you need out of it.

  • I had the option of take a six week course (two hours each weekend), but because of DH's work schedule we are going to take the weekend class that lasts for a few hours on both a Saturday and Sunday.
  • We are taking the day-long childbirth class when I am 31 weeks. Our hospital suggests taking it at 7 or 8 months.
