Sorry to ask but is Mahi Mahi Ok?

Sorry for the annoying "can I eat this question" but the answers I found when I googled are pretty inconsistent.  I am heading out to a new restaurant tonight and this looks like the only thing on the menu that I would like but I will obviously avoid if it isn't ok for the baby.  I know most things are fine in moderation but I would rather just avoid if most doctors suggest it. TIA!

  • Yes, Mahi mahi is totally fine!  It is low in mercury.
  • Thanks for the quick responses.  Think I am going to go ahead and enjoy it tonight ;)

  • According to what I have found, the FDA has tested several samples of Mahi Mahi and the mercury levels ranged from 0.1 to 0.45 parts per million of mercury.  The FDA recommends that pregnant women limit their intake of fish that have and average of 0.5 parts per million to 14 ounces per week.  Since all the tested levels of Mahi Mahi are less than 0.5 ppm, you should be okay to go out to dinner and have the Mahi Mahi.  Me personally though, I have decided to just play it safe and do without seafood until baby is born.

  • Just to respond to PP, avoiding all fish is really not playing it safe. Ever source I've seen/read recommends pregnant women eat a certain amount of fish, just to stick to species that are low in mercury. Fish also contains really important nutrients for brain development. It's really too bad our world is so polluted that we have to worry about limiting our intake Sad

I've also heard that "they" do recomment pregnant women eat some fish for the nutrients that it does have.  I guess I'm just hoping that I'll get those nutrients from other foods and my prenatal vitamins.  All the conflicting mercury info just scares the bejeezus out of me.
