Unpaid. Sort of. The first six weeks are covered under the Short Term Disability Act and we get 60% of our salay. After that, I can take up to 6 additional weeks but I have to exhaust my sick and vacation time and then go to leave without pay.
We get paid out all the "paid time off" and "sick leave" we have accumulated, but after that, it is unpaid leave. Fortunately, I am sitting on about 6 weeks of accumulated leave right now. Since it accumlates with each pay period, I'll have about 7 weeks by the time I actually head to the house.
Sorry, I wasn't done typing....the second six weeks are covered under the Family Medical Leave Act so technically, my company does not have an actual "maternity leave" policy. But every company is different and I believe it also varies state to state.
I get one week full pay for every year that I've been here, then it's 60% BUT that's based on Short term disability (which would be 6 weeks) if I stay out longer then I get a big fat zero.
We have unpaid maternity leave but our work provides short term disability insurance which will cover 60% of our pay while out. So if the doctor puts me on bed rest before delivery my short term disability would cover it. If I want to stay out after I am allowed to go back to work it will come out of my PTO (paid time off) hours which I'm trying really hard to gain before the baby gets here.
Up to 12 weeks unpaid... but I'll be using my 2 weeks vacation and I hear they'll pay me 2 weeks (not set in stone). Also, I'm going to double check to see if I can do some part time work at home to bring in some extra $$.
I'm kicking myself because I turned down short term disability which would have given me 60% of my salary for 12 weeks...stupid stupid me.

We get 6 weeks paid and up to another 6 weeks unpaid of "maternity leave". If we want to use vacation time to take paid time off, we can, up to 4 weeks. So technically I could have up to 10 weeks paid, but I didn't save enough days so I'm only taking 8.
Yes to both, but how much paid leave you have depends on your sick and vacation leave balances. There's no special category for maternity leave, so you just use accumulated sick and annual/personal.
However we do have a policy that is a bit more generous than FMLA, in that my employer gaurantees 6 months of leave (paid, unpaid or a combo of both) for maternity and parental care during the first year.
I'm planning to take 3 months paid leave at first, then go down to a three-day-a-week work schedule (only get paid for days I work) for the following nine months or until my six-month allocation runs out.
FWIW, your job has to hold your position for you (and I believe cover your benefits, but I could be wrong) for 12 weeks, per FMLA. Your company can choose to pay your or not during that 12 weeks, but the time frame is federally mandated.
I am allowed 12 weeks. Of that 12 weeks I can get paid for 6 of them IF I have enough sick time.
But since DC will be born in July I can use my 12 weeks starting at the beginning of the school year instead of at the time of birth. I plan to take the first 6 weeks of the school year off.
I'm extremely fortunate. After 6 weeks disability (@60% pay) for vaginal birth or 8 weeks for c-section, my company pays 8 weeks full salary of maternity leave. After that, its vacation/sick/FMLA. They will hold your job for 6 months maximum. I'm only doing the paid portion, we can't afford to take off with no pay. So, for me, it will be about 3.5 months.
I want to just say that the ONLY reason we have this is because our former CEO was a woman!

I work fed govt too and at least within DoD, you can substitute unpaid leave for paid leave (if you have it). They will allow the use of sick leave for as long as the dr will write you out (6-8w depending on type of delivery) and then you can use annual leave for the remaining up to 12w. You can actually go negative in your sick leave (using advanced sick leave) if you need it. Check your policies - I got paid 100% of the 12w when I had my DS.
Re: Maternity Leave
unfortunately, currently
federal gov't = unpaid maternity leave

I also work at a school.
