Seriously, you cannot have a better dog! :(

It makes me so sad to think that Coach's days are numbered.  And something silly will happen (like just right now) that will remind me that he is seriously the best, smartest dog ever!

When he lays on our bed, he gets hot.  When he gets hot, he starts licking.  Himself, the covers, etc.  I let it go for a little while but then it starts to get annoying.  So I say "Coach, enough licking!"  BAM --- done.  He stops and lays down.  I mean, dude, the dog stops licking on command.  He will also stop barking on command as well (95% of the time anyway).  If I say "Coach, enough."  He will stop!  It's freaking carazy!  I love this dog!

  • LOL - I used to say to my dog "stop staring at me" and she would - too funny!

Is there something wrong with your dog, or is she just getting old?  It's so hard when they are gone, but having a dog is just priceless

  • He has bone cancer!  :(

He no longer puts any pressure on his front leg (which is the knuckle that has the bone cancer in it) and we are guessing he has another 1-4 months left with us.

  • I once told my dog, "Puppy, its hot, go get a drink of water".  And he did.

    Sorry 'bout Coach.  :(

  • awww I'm sorry! Dogs quickly become like a member of the family.
  • I still miss my dog.  We had to put him down in 1996 (cancer and diabetes).  I was in Germany for the summer so I didn't even get to say goodbye.

  • zenya -- we are going to FL 03/04-03/08 and I'm so concerned that he is going to suddenly take a turn for the worst and my mom or Joe's mom is going to have to bring him.  Not only will that be an extreme burden on them but I will just die if we are not here for him when the time comes!  I have to hold him while it's happening --- for my own piece of mind.  :(

  • I love Coach stories!  He needs to come over here and teach Chopper to stop licking.  The constant licking drives me batty.

    And (((hugs)))

  • I'm so sorry.  I just lost my cockatiel to kidney failure.  It's hard to see them suffering, and it's so hard to not see them at all.

Angela --- I'm so sorry!  (((HUGS)))

  • DM - I think we are such a dog family that we will most likely want to get another one.  And soon.  BUT I'm so worried. Coach was so easily trained --- he just really didn't take much in the way of training.  And we had the ideal situation when we got him.  1. no kids!  :)  2. I worked 7 minutes from home so I would come home at lunch and let him out 3. we were able to crate train him before allowing him to go to work with Joe every day.  If we get a new one, crate training is going to be HARD because there are people in our house all day long.  The kids won't want the dog to stay in the crate --- and neither will we (not fair to the dog when there are human playmates around!).

Do you think I'm overanalyzing (wouldn't be the first time!) or do you think I am right in being concerned that the current situation just might not be the right one?!?!?!

  • Sorry to hear about the cancer Jodi ((hugs))
  • It is hard to get a new dog when you have small kids in the house.  We often won't adopt to families with toddlers just because it often doesn't work out.  But maybe you just need to spend some time looking for the right dog.  A 2-3 y/o dog who is already crate and house trained and is good with kids might be a really good idea for you.

  • Thanks Jodi.

I think I'd wait a bit before getting another dog.  You want to make sure you find the right one for your family, and you don't want it to feel like you're replacing Coach.  I think you'll know when the time is right.
