Swollen/Puffiness... should I be concerned?

OK, so TWO people today have told me I look puffy.  My regular SB barista... and now my boss.  I posted these at my statuses today on FB ('cause what else do you do when someone tells you you look puffy...)  I was trying to shake off the comments and be funny, buuuut... a friend just replied with "Allison - that is concerning - I remember my doctor telling me to call if I got puffier than normal."

Thoughts?  I'm 38 weeks on Monday... my feet are swollen... my hands are swollen... *I* can't notice my face... but what do I know. I thought the swelling was all normal end of PG stuff.

Worth a call???  Should I get DH's second opinion on the face swelling?

Re: Swollen/Puffiness... should I be concerned?

  • How do you feel otherwise?  I think being puffy at the end of pregnancy is normal but if you are dizzy or your hands are numb, headaches, blurred vision, get to the Dr!
  • Loading the player...
  • If you drink some water and put your feet up and you don't notice a reduction in the puffy-ness I'd call.

If you're concerned at all I'd call...better to be on the safe side.

I'm UBBER tired... and feeling sleepy-borderline lethargic...  but other wise... fine.  I walked to lunch... and was feeling pretty OK.

  • Worth a call.  Not to scare you but I wish I had called when I was extra swollen.

  • No advice, but let us know what they say.

And how did you get to be almost 38 weeks already?!  I swear you just announced that you are pregnant!

  • From what I understand that it perfectly normal!  I think if you get TOOOOOO puffy they are concerned with preeclampsia right?  But I doubt you are to that extreme...of course it never hurts to call...

And how funny is it that our SB baristas know us that well?  My barista just made a comment to me the other day about my pregnancy too...LOL!

  • I hope it's nothing - let us know what the advice nurse says!
  • I hope it's nothing too. I've noticed that I've been a little puffier than normal lately too, and I was up a few pounds at my last appt that my OB thinks is due to water retention. When is your next appt? If the advice nurse doesn't say to go in, maybe you can go to the drugstore to test your BP?

  • OK... just called.  She ran through a bunch of questions... but said that over all it sounds pretty normal "like signs of labor" she said (YIKES!).  She suggested that I weigh myself at home and see if I have rapid weight gain (ummm... I have been on the scale in sooooo long... I don't even know WHAT I weigh!).  She also suggested that if I get a head ache... or visual issues... or chest pain to come in and get my blood pressure checked.

In the meanwhile... I think I'm filling up my water bottle... and heading home.

    Thanks Ladies!!

  • It couldnt hurt to call

37/38 weeks is when i blew up too : (

  • I'm glad you called!

I started getting swollen a week before I went into labor.  I thought it was normal but I was so wrong....

  • You body can change overnight in those last few weeks/days of pregnancy.  My BP was sky high the day I delivered and never had an issue prior and had had my last dr appt 5 days before.  I hope it is nothing serious!!!  Go home and rest.  Make your DH get you some dinner (preggo pizza from Skippolinis???) and drink lots of water!

  • I seem to remember feeling "unswollen" until about 37-38 weeks and then BOOM... I was swollen all over. Got even worse after bith but has gone away now at 2 weeks post birth.

Are you having any other symptoms?? Headache? How has your blood pressure been throughout your pregnancy??

I might shoot your Dr an email, and then go home, lay back, put your feet and rest!

  • I am glad you called. Take it easy, make sure if you have ANY of the other symptoms you call asap. It can be nothing, or a lot.. good news is your far along and "ready" in that way. They also told me if I kept my feet up overnight and still had a lot of swelling in the morning to call.
  • Just wanted to say I'm thinking about you!
  • I know I was retaining a lot of water at the end but I'd call if you're concerned.  Hope everything is fine.
