Well, it's been six months since my last cleaning and I'm going in less than 45 minutes to the dentist. I'm told it hurts more while pregnant (I'll update later and give my opinion) but I'm hoping it won't.
I plan to skip the X-rays just to be safe?and I know they use that giant lead apron and all should be OK. I figure I'm already contaminating my baby with hair dye chemicals (next appt. is Saturday) so I want to at least not expose him/him to x-rays.
At least it'll be nice to share my news with the office receptionist, who has known me since I was 10 years old or so (through 3 dentists, they keep inheriting her).
Re: Dental Visits
OMG! I'm so glad you posted this, I was going to as well. I've got my first apt next week for a cleaning since i've become pregnant. I was forbidden from X-rays, they don't care how far along I am! (maybe they have an old mahine or something?) who knows?
anywho, same here, i've been going there for some 15yrs and I got married the same time as my hygienists's daughter (we are the same age) so she'll be pretty thrilled that I'm pregnant, I hope her daughter is too!
Please let us know how it turns out... thanks again!

Looks like we all are loyal to our dentists. I too have been going to the same practice since I'm 16. Everyone knows me & alot of them knew I was trying to get pregnant for the last few years. I just went this Tuesday & my cleaning did not bother me. I do always request a particular hygenist, who is gentle on me. She is in her late 40's now but she tried to get pregnant for years unsuccessfully. Did the IUI's & IVF & nothing worked. Her husband didn't want to adopt. But she was so genuinely happy for me, knowing how difficult the journey was.
Then one of the assistants happened to walk by & I saw her do a double-take & all of a sudden my dentist was there. He was very happy for me & gave me a congratulations kiss. One by one most of the staff who knew me were all coming in to congratulate me. It was so nice.
I did however bleed like crazy, mostly just from my front 4 teeth which are crowned & always somewhat inflamed. I did book another cleaning in 4 months just because I know after a good cleaning I could go for months without much bleeding issues. My gums tell me when it's time.
Well, I'm back from my appointment and everything went well. I actually felt a bit dizzy from being leaned back so far in the chair, but my dentist just paused for a bit (he does cleanings except for 2 days a week) and I did OK. And my gums barely bled. Yay.
The receptionist was out of the office when I arrived, but she got back during my cleaning. When she noticed the paperwork was changed?removing the x-rays?she asked why. And when she found out I was pregnant she was thrilled. It's funny, she said "I had a feeling..."
I guess she has known me for so long, knew I waited until I was 38 to get married, that she thought she'd hear good news. I'm glad I was able to give her some.
My next appointment should have been in August, but since my due date is 8/6 I had them push it back to September (they'll send me a reminder card to make my appt.). My gums/teeth looked good, so they have no issues with spreading the appointments from every 6 months to 7 or 8 months apart.
And, fiazo, my husband was going at 4-month increments until recently. His teeth/gums have gotten better finally.

I hope the visit wasn't too uncomfortable for you! When I was pregnant the first time, I was having trouble with a particular tooth and was sure I had a cavity. I hadn't been to the dentist in several years and I wasn't sure what they could do while I was pregnant. Fortunately, it wasn't a cavity and I didn't require a filling, but I did have a cleaning and it went well. I didn't have any extra discomfort at all.
I've been going for regular visits every six months since then and my next one will be when I'm about 5.5 months along. I'm hoping it goes as well this time around too. I'm sure the office staff will love hearing your news!!!

Hi ladies-
I don't mean to one up anyone, but I just had a root canal AND a filling last week.... don't ask.... but it didn't hurt any more than it would have non pregnant..
Hope the cleaning was painless!!
Christine
The cleaning was relatively painless (just a mild ache right now) and luckily I did not need fillings or a root canal?you poor thing! Though my dentist did not take x-rays and could have missed a small cavity. But no tenderness on my teeth and my existing fillings seem just fine.
I'll go back a month or so after I have the baby and have my full set of x-rays and another cleaning.
