What do you think of the name Abigail?

I know some of you hate name posts, so I apologize to those people :-)

I already posted over on Baby Names, but I'm obsessed and this is all I can think about today, so I'm posting here too to try and get as many opinions as possible!

DH and I are thinking about naming our daughter Abigail, and I wanted to see what people think of the name.  We'd probablly call her Abby as a nickname.

(My mother's name is Abigail (and she goes by Abby), so I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around Abigail being my daughter's name as well as my mother's name!)

We'd likely use Ruth as the middle name because Ruth is my mother in law's middle name, and that way she'd be named after both her grandmothers (she will be the first grandchild on both sides, and my kids will be the only grandkids on my side).

So, Abigail Ruth, called Abby.  What do you think?

  • I love, love, love the name Abigail! But one of my co-irkers name is Abbe and I can't stand her. So she has made it impossible for me to use that name! I think Abigail Ruth is cute and love the meaning behind it!

  • I love the name Abigail, but DH vetoed it when we were discussing names. Luckily we're having a boy so it was a non-issue!

  • I like it. I was named for my grandmother, her name was Annette, but I always went by Annie. You could also call her Aba - I had a friend who did this or just call her Abigail.
  • I love the name Abigail! And Abby is a very cute nn. I am indifferent to the name Ruth but for you I love Abigail Ruth because it honors both of your daughter's grandmothers. That's very nice. Since the names have meaning and if you like them, I don't see why anyone else's opinons should matter. But mine is that you have an awesome name choice! Smile

  • I grew up in the country and there were dairy farms all around. By law (in Canada), all dairy cows must be named. Usually to save time and aggravation, the farmer just picks one name and gives it to all the cows. The farm that was directly behind my house, all the cows were named Abigail so that's what I think of when I hear that name. Pretty name otherwise, just makes me think of cows. :)
  • DH and I both like it a lot. My only concern is that is seems to be really popular right now.

  • I think it is sweet to name her for both grandmothers, and the name in general is nice :)
  • LOVE Abigail... but I'd call her Abigail. I'm not big on nicknames, though.

FWIW- I also think Ruth is a precious name. I'm a sucker for the old fashioned girl names.

  • I like the name Abigail and Abby for a nickname.  And I love that she will be named after both Grandmas! :)  I think it's a good idea.

I have a friend who recently named her daughter after her mom. I think it's sweet and if boys can be named after their dads and/or granddads, then so can girls. :)

  • Abigail was on the top of my list if we have a girl, but DH and I aren't really a big fan of Abby. So I crossed if off our list. Just our opinion.

I think Abigail Ruth is adorable.

  • I really, really like the name Abigail but that being said it has been one of the most popular names for many years now.  So the likelihood of it being a "Lisa" of the 70's is there.

  • I love name posts; I also love the name Abigail! Good choice!!
  • I wouldn't use it for my daughter, but I do like it. I do also think it is a very popular name. I'm trying to stray from popular names.

Ang -- that's exactly what DH is trying to convince me!  My dad and DH's dad are both juniors, so they both grew up with two people in the house having the same name.  DH insists that it won't be confusing.  Also, my mom goes by Gail with her family (mom and brothers, and usually with my dad) but Abby professionally, so she'll most likely just become Gail at our house also!

I'm actually okay with having two people with the same name in the family -- I think that's fairly common.  What I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around is seeing the name independently from my mom.  It's like to me Abby = mom and nothing else.  But I LOVE the idea of naming this baby after her, and I do love the name.  So I guess I'm just trying to make sure that no one else equates the name Abby with a 60 year old grandma-to-be!!!

  • LOVE it.  Abby for a baby/little girl is SOOOO adorable!
  • Well, color me CLUELESS. I had no idea Abigail was popular.
  • I think it's a great name - and really sweet to be named after her grandmother's!  DH loves the name Abigail but right now I'm leaning towards Harper Ann - it's MIL's maiden name and my mom's middle name.  I love the idea of honoring the mothers.  :)
  • I really like it - and I think it sounds great with the middle name, too.?

This is the best thing I've heard all day and one of the many reasons I love Canada!

  • I think the name is really pretty. I just wish people wouldn't automatically shorten it to Abby all the time.

  • I like the name Abigail a lot?and my friend's nice is Abigail/Abby.

Though if you'll be uncomfortable naming your daughter after your mother, no matter how much you like the name, perhaps you should reconsider?

But if you're OK with it... why not?

  • I LOVE that name! Thats the name we have chosen if its a girl! :)

Only 3 more weeks until we find out!

    I adore it.

    I agree~!!!!!!

  • We chose it for our dog and a few months after that it occured to me how much I loved the name and now I can never use it for a child, haha.  I love saying the whole name and the nick name Abby.
  • I love that name, but we can't use it  :-(

DH's best friend/the to-be God Father proposed to a witch named Abby who tore his heart out and smashed it into the floor, before stomping on it,  while everyone was watching.  It was supposed to be a wonderful moment for him and it became his worst.  We'd never use that name now, because we love him too much and don't want to ever cause him to think of her again.
