Baby Names

Lucy - full name or nickname?

My husband and I disagree on this one. I think Lucy qualifies as a full name, he thinks it's a nickname.

We're not the type to name our kids "Kate" instead of "Katherine" or "Beth" instead of "Elizabeth" (no offense if you are, I just personally prefer to give a kid a more formal name) so I'm wondering what you all think of Lucy. Is it more of a nickname or a stand-alone name?

Thanks.

Re: Lucy - full name or nickname?

  • Lucy is really cute. I don't like Lucille at all though; it's too old-fashioned for my taste and I think it's too old sounding for a baby girl. I like Luciana, have you thought of that? You could call her Lucy for short.

  • I think you're both right. It used to be a nickname, but now people are using it as a standalone name.?

  • i think lucy is fine on it's own. i'm not a fan of lucille.

or you could do something like lucia and just call her lucy?

  • People do use it as a full name these days, but the formal names I can think of that it would be a nickname for are: Lucille, Luciana, Lucia, Lucilla...

  • Thanks ... I don't really like any of the full versions, too flowery for me. I like Lucy because it's spunky and cheery and I don't feel like the long versions have that vibe. I'll have to keep working on the hubz, I guess!
  • I agree with you on giving a child a full name, but I think Lucy is fine on its own.  It isn't too cutesy and can really grow with a child.  If you did want to make it a nickname I would pick a full name like Luciana or Lucia.  I don't care for Lucille at all.

  • Lucy is an interchangeable name. It can be either a full name or a nickname.  I personally love the name.  We considered it but DH could'nt get lucille ball out of his head every time he said it so we changed.

  • I think of Lucy as more if a "full" name.  I have a co-worker who has a daughter named Lucy and is isn't a nn.  I like it, I think it is really pretty.

  • I think it's a "stand alone" name... I don't know what "full" name there is for Lucy other than Lucille (which reminds me of Lucille Ball...)

I think that Lucy is cute!

  • As someone who shares your views, I do think Lucy can stand alone on its own.

FWIW, I also think Kate has come to be able to stand alone. Beth, not so much.

  • I think of Lucy as a full name - it's my cousin's name & she's named after our great-grandmother.

  • I think it could be either.  Also works with Lucinda (another nn -Cindy).

  • to me it is more of a nickname, but i just really go for longer, more traditional sounding names.

  • You can definately use it as a stand alone name but my husband and I are similar. We like formal names with nicknames. You could use the name Lucinda and nickname her Lucy. Also Lucinda is more modern then Lucille and it's very pretty.

  • I think it makes sense as a full name.  Have you thought about Lucinda with Lucy as a nn?
  • Lucy is a full name.
  • I know a Lucianne who goes by Luci.

  • I like Lucy as a nn for Lucinda.
  • I would use Lucille, but only because that's my grandma's name. Also, I like Lucillia.

  • I think it can be a stand alone name.  I agree on the Kate/Katherine thing you said, but I think that Lucy is a name in itself.

  • Lucy can definitely be considered a full name these days. She can still be called Luce for short or even Lu. I agree with others that Lucille is an older name so naming her just Lucy brings it up to date. Lucy would be on my name list but it doesn't sound to great with my last name =(
