My SIL is about 14 weeks pregnant and she is normally very overweight. She didn't have much morning sickness if any and lost 10 lbs in her first tri. Now she is in her 2nd tri and still hasn't gained any weight.
I personally think that it is because she stopped eating McDonalds 4x's a week and started drinking water rather than iced tea.
But she always asks me if it is normal because she is freaking out. I tell her yes because I didn't gain until just a few weeks ago (16-18 wks) and it is normal to lose in your first tri. Plus you are only supposed to gain a total of 15 lbs when you are overweight.
Am I wrong with what I told her? Or do you think there is something wrong that she isn't gaining?
Re: Weight gain/loss question.

No, definitely not. I know several overweight people who ended up gaining less than 10 pound total by the end of their pg.
With both pg's I didn't start gaining until nearly 20 weeks. I would say that I am a little overweight (I have about 20lbs pre-pg that I would like to lose).
Yes, she's dropping weight because she stopped her poor eating habits. That is normal and there is nothing wrong with her.
However, I would not have told her that she is only "supposed" to gain 15lbs since you aren't her doctor. I'm overweight as well and my doctor told me to just gain weight. She cannot be restricted to a certain weight goal because she may end up eating less than she should.
She will start gaining soon and when she does, she can ask her doctor to monitor her progress and make sure she isn't gaining too much. But make sure that she eats and doesn't focus on a restriction as little as 15lbs

Her doctor said it was normal but she needs to make sure she eats. I thinks she's looking for reassurance.
She should definitely talk to her doctor, but your advice sounds good to help her chill until she gets an appointment.
If it helps, I was average pre pg, and at my last appointment was told I hadn't gained anything (around 16 weeks) which the doctor said was OK (but that I should start gaining soon).
