baby pinching nipple b/n gums

I feel like my baby is pinching my nipple between her gums when she latches on. Is this normal in the beginning or a sign of a bad latch? I only really feel the pinching on one side and not the other.

Note: I've come late to BFing since I was EPing before so I've really only been nursing consistently for about 2 weeks.

Re: baby pinching nipple b/n gums

  • Is she doing this right away or after a let down? She could be trying to control the flow of milk coming at her if you have a fast/hard let down.

  • She does it right away. It hurts terribly at first and then gets better after a bit. I try to have her try again to get a better latch but sometimes it is just the same story the second time, etc.
  • If you can peek in her mouth at all, check to see if her tongue is out.  My DD pulled her tongue back and that was why she pinched me with her gums.  If your DC is pulling her tongue back, I'd recommend an LC to fix the latch.
  • Cool! thanks for the tip!

When she sucks on my finger she still uses her tongue though so I wonder if she does something different when I nurse her.
