Talk to me about sign twirlers...

I am still kind of facinated by them.  I've seen them all over San Diego, furniture stores, going out of business sales, tax prep.

There were none in Minnesota when I lived there.

Do you have sign twirlers in your area?  I'm wondering how much they get paid - perhaps per sign twirl, a little ticker measures the spins the sign has made?  How effective is it really?  And who the heck decides to get their taxes done someplace because a chick in a statue of liberty costume, crazy glasses and a sash waved a sign?

Re: Talk to me about sign twirlers...

  • Is a sign twirler the same as the person who stands on the corner in the freezing cold or baking heat holding a sign that always seems to say that a furniture store is going out of business?

  • We have them all over the place. I think they get paid minimum wage, and I usually only saw kids or minorities do it.

The other day I saw a middle aged typical OC Housewife doing it down the street from my house. I figure her rich husband might have been laid off or something

  • Yes, some are quite animated flipping that thing constantly.

Perhaps there is a more pc term?

  • We have sign twirlers in CO.  Well, some of them just stand there and hold the sign, but there are some who really have flair!  I imagine their arms must get tired!  I don't think they get paid very much.  I feel bad for them when it's raining/snowing/swealtering.

I've never been drawn to a place b/c of a sign twirler, I don't know how much business they actually draw for a place.

  • Ours don't twirl them, they just stand there looking really cold or really hot.
  • Our area has been invaded by sign twirlers.  They advertise oil changes, stores going out of business, tax prep, etc.  One intersection I drove by last weekend had 6 sign twirlers!

I think they get paid minimum wage.

  • Six is a bit much!  That might induce seizures, if they are active.
  • I often wonder the same thing...how much money do they make?  I don't think I've ever gone to a store that has a twirler advertising for them.  We have a statue of liberty person on our corner right by our house,  That costume freaks me the F out.
  • We have those sign people here in CT. ?Whenever I see an Uncle Sam or Lady Liberty at tax time, I wave to them! ?What can I say, I'm patriotic! ?They always wave back as if I am the only person who acknowledged them all day.

  • There are sign twirlers in the Twin Cities.

One guy twirled a sign on France Ave, I saw another guy twirling at Rosedale Mall.

  • according to google they get paid anywhere from $8 - $15 an hour depending on how good they are.

There are a bunch of videos of it on youtube.
