2nd Trimester

Teachers Who Need to Take it Easy

Ok we have all thought about it and I know it is on our worry list- how do we take it easy and get off of our feet in our profession?

Here is a chance to brainstorm some ideas.

*I have a round table in my room that I can use for students to come over and meet with me to go over their work.  Too bad it is Special Education and they ALL need me at all times so the table will be full.

Re: Teachers Who Need to Take it Easy

  • I'm in the same situation as you. I teach special education k-3rd grade. I have a kidney shaped table that I have all the kids sit around me durinng instruction time.

  • I have a stool that I sit on while using the overhead projector. I also have a rolling computer chair that I used when I was on bed rest but didn't have the days to take off. The administrators have been kept in the loop about the issues I've been facing, so they know not to say anything if I'm not standing or walking the room when they come in.

I also have a table that I sit at while the kids are doing individual work. If they have a question, I have them come to the table to get help. Although, I teach 7th graders, so they are a little more independent than younger grades.

How many are on your caseload?  Are you working with one grade at a time?

  • I like this post...I need some ideas since I am having the worst leg cramps and everything already from being on my feet all day.

  • Do you think we can get a board for teachers?  This could be a good on-going discussion for all three trimesters.

  • I hope I don't have this issue!  I teach k-5 enrichment (gifted ed) and not only am on my feet all day - but I have to walk down to get my students in grades k-2.  The only saving grace is that I have a SmartBoard...so I can pretty much control if from the laptop on my desk if i ABSOLUTELY had to be sitting down.
  • I work in a daycare with the toddlers so I never get to get off of my feet and if I do it is for like 30 seconds. I have switched with my coworker so now instead of lifting children onto the changing table to change their diapers, I take the older ones to the bathroom. I change diapers when needed just not all day now which makes it a little easier on me.

  • I took a tall-ish stool from our science lab and put it in front of my classroom. ?This way if I get tired of standing I can sit down but I am still sitting tall. ?If we are discussing something I usually have a seat or if students are doing cooperative work, I will usually take a break. ?
  • I teach 4th grade and while it's almost impossible for me to get off of my feet I try to get the students to come to me or I sit in a chair at the front of the class while we read or have a discussion.  It is hard though...

  • I teach K and I use a director's chair when I am teaching at our carpet, and I like to sit at the extra chairs at the tables when the kids are doing work. Otherwise, I try to sit or lean on something when I am not at my desk.

  • I teach K and I have a rocking chair in the front of my classroom. If we are having carpet time or working on the SMARTBoard, I sit in my chair. When we do reading groups, I sit at my reading table. I get a lot of time to sit when I need it; however, my classroom is the last one in the building and all of their special classes are at the opposite end as well as the office!
  • I have a large padded sketching chair that I sit on and teach from a lot of the time inf ront of the room.  The kids have been great coming to me.

I have 30 altogether. Luckily my kindergartners are all either consults or non pull out. Then I see the 1st/2nd grade at one time and then the 3rd grade at another. I see most of my 1st and 2nd graders two different times throughout the day. 1st/2nd grade Language Arts togehter. 1st math inclusion time. 2nd grade math pull out and 3rd grade pull out for Written Language Arts. I'm really lucky though. I have an aide that's in there with me for the most part. Especially since we started with a new reading program. Read Well K, Read Well K-Plus and Read Well 1.

  • I sit a lot now-a-days and teach from my chair. (I don't have a desk). The kids have started coming to me to turn in work rather than me going to them.

  • My caseload hit 20 back in Dec.....fortunately I have been out since Dec.  During my 1st tri I did the kidney table and areas, mostly in my chair.  I just rolled around in my chair and moved it where I needed it to be.  There are times when teaching leaves you breathless and exhausted.  My doc took me out for a history of complications.  There is really no way to take it easy.  It is hard!  You guys hang in there.   I miss my kids, but I need my babies to make it.  You teachers please keep in touch!
