Folic Acid for men

Did anyone have folic acid recommended for their H? I have read articles about it, and all of them talk about the study where they gave men 5 milligrams a day (not micrograms, milligrams!) - that's over 12 times the reccomended amount. It just seems excessive so I wondered what the dosage from a doc would be like.

RE is recommending a male fertility blend at $180 a month Indifferent so I don't want to go that route right away.

Re: Folic Acid for men

  • i have no clue. yikes! 180?

  • Yikes is right. That's per month! I was going to grab the vitamins that Chrys and Staycee mentioned yesterday but thought I would add folic acid too. Maybe I can just give him 800 mcg for now plus whatever is in his multi and see how that goes. 5 milligrams seems like overkill
  • yeah that sounds like a good plan. is he up for all the vitamins?
  • He says he is... but seeing them all stacked up in a pill container might change his mind. I'm sure this goes without saying, but he really wants a baby too, so I hope he will still choke them down. God knows I am. I grimace every day Ick!
  • I am not sure, but that does seem excessive but maybe it's different for men. I was told by the dr. today not to go over 2000 mcg a day. (but that's for me) i have to take the PNV, folic acid and when we do get pg I have to take baby aspirin and prometrium in addition to that. :(

  • Mine takes folic acid, but like 2 400mcg pills a day I think. He does not complain about all his vitamins.  We don't have MFI, but the count was still lower than I would like it, the RE said it was fine, but could be higher, so I figure the vitamins won't hurt. Walmart is the cheapest place I have found them.

I got one of those weekly pill thingies for DH, and loaded it all up for him every Sunday night so that it was ready to go for the week.    That way DH didn't have to bother opening and closing all of the separate vit. bottles.    However, I did have to buy a pretty roomy one to fit all the pills.

Oh, and then DH attached magnet to the back so that he could just hang the sucker on the side of the fridge.

  • oh, and my RE initially suggested the expensive fertility crap too.   But when I told her I was buying all the vitamins separately she said that was fine too.

I got them all from www.puritan.com

    super cheap there.
