3rd Trimester

***iris*** and other bfing moms

I have heard two diff. sides of "toughing your nipples" for BF.
one saying you should do it or they will get cracked and sore really easily and other saying it doesnt really matter bc they will be sore no matter what? do you have an opinion or think it really matters?

  • In the BF class I took she said not too.  I think you're gonna be sore no matter what though.

  • Your also not supposed to wash your nipples but I lather those puppies up all the time!
  • My OPINION is that it doesn't really matter.  Working on the latch once you start is more important.  Your breasts will be sore either way.  (And I did read something the other day that said toughening the nipples wasn't proven to help).

This!  Mine still cracked and bled at first until we got the latch down.

  • oops sorry- I posted above- didn't see this post.

When I took my BF class the lady said not to rough them up, not to wash them, and that if I was doing it right it should feel good. ?I'm not sure I believe her on the last one which is why I posted above. ?

  • The lactation nurse told me not to toughen up my nipples.  If they got sore, she recommended using BM to lube them up.
  • I do not think that is necessary. If anything, I would recommend putting nipple cream on them to get them softer. My nipples cracked and bled in the hospital and it hurt to nurse for about a week, but you make it through. The cream really helped me!
  • Mine never really got sore with DS.   I BF's ds for 13 months and never really had any nipple problems, no soreness, or cracking.  I think you should just wait and see.  Dont expect the worst because it may not be nearly as bad as you read or hear.
  • I did not "toughen up" my nips and all was fine. I was sore for about the first 3 days or so - but I had an EXCELLENT

  • I did not "toughen up" my nips and all was fine. I was sore for about the first 3 days or so (which is normal...unless of course you have a nip-obsessed DH who does nothing but suck on your tata's for hours on end every day!) - but I had an EXCELLENT nurse in the hospital who taught me/DS how to properly latch - which is the key factor in the pain of BFing. Proper latching will decrease the pain.

  • I didn't do anything before and had no problems. Make sure to get a LC into your room pp before you leave. That and the breastfeeding class I swear made all the difference. Of course, it didn't hurt that DD had a good latch from the beginning. I hope to be as lucky this time around!
