Stupid SA question

H might be in the denial phase. He decided to get his sample at home and drive it to the lab. He kept it warm, but there was a parkinf fiasco and he thinks it might have been over an hour by the time they actually got the sample.

I'm thinking the time might be an issue with motility, but I don't know that morphology would be affected. We are repeating the SA anyway, but I was just curious if anyone knew. I guess the doctor didn't say anything when he told her about that, but of course, getting the story secondhand from H isn't always entirely accurate.

Re: Stupid SA question

  • I have no idea, but it is always a good idea to get a repeat SA.  Numbers can vary wildly

  • As Lari said, numbers can vary so I don't think it's a bad thing that your DH remains positive until the repeat. He should probably do the lifestyle changes as well...just to make sure he "rocks it", ya know.

Good luck to both of you. It's tough being in limbo.

  • I was told by both my OB and my RE that the best way to acquire a sample is to do it at the lab. The lab is able to keep the temperature optimal, etc.?

For his next sample, can your H go to the lab? I know (or imagine, anyway) that it's unpleasant, but just doing it there would eliminate these kinds of unknowns.

  • Thanks! I am trying to stay positive. Yesterday was hard, but if the second SA comes back poor again, it almost takes a bit of weight off my shoulders if that makes any sense. I will finish out my series of tests to rule out anything major with me, and then just go on with life as usual. We aren't in a financial position to start IVF, nor am I mentally ready.

Maybe this will suffice as a break. I will probably continue to chart, but I won't really be working my ass off to time sex or counting down the days in the 2ww, that's for sure.

  • Its good to stay positive.  I burst MH bubble that's for sure.  He had 2 SA's and the 1st his numbers were fantastic but morphology and motility was an issue so they did a retest.  He was sure it had to be better and the last one was a fluke.

Sadly the results were worse, like 1/2 the %s.  The set him up with a specialist and we were on our own for one more O.  We got a BFP on 12/23.  Everything was wonderful and amazing.  We were thrilled to do it on our own.

Then I had a missed miscarriage on 2/10 with a D & C on 2/12.  Baby never grew past 7w4d.  So now we are set to try again.  GL to you and even if they tell you it can't be done, it can and it doesn't hurt to try
