Do I have to dump the extra milk from a bottle?

Hi!

I just started back to work, half-days for awhile; DH is watching the little guy till we start him in daycare. Anyhow, my son keeps falling asleep with about 2 oz left in a bottle. It's always right before I get home at noon. I was under the impression I have to dump the milk? It's fresh milk I've pumped from the day before. DH goes to work for the afternoon and I don;'t want to give DS the bottle (want to BF exclusively to keep supply up) but it's killing me to keep dumping the few ounces he doesn't eat.  Can I freeze it?

Couldn't find a good answer on the LLL site, but I'll check Medela too; waiting for an LC to call back. Just wondered if there's a way to save it, other than having DH give just a few ounces at a time and try not to waste...

Thanks!

  • My understanding is that you need to dump it after an hour or so.

  • I don't think you can freeze that.  I was always told that you could use it for the next feeding, but after that it needed to be dumped.  Why doesn't your hubby put less in the bottle.  He could always have two bottles ready with half the amount in each, that way if he falls asleep you still have a bottle that you can refrigerated or freeze.
  • I would not freeze it but you could still use it for up to 4 hours.  I was going to say what PP said, take the 2 ounces out into another bottle.  If he needs it, you can dump it into the "dirty" bottle or just freeze it if he doesn't want it.
