XP: Pls help me to pick paint colors!

XP: I need sooo much help! I cannot design for the life of me (well, maybe I'm not THAT bad....), but I can't pick paint colors. You see... we have to pick paint for the following rooms...

  • living room (TV room)
  • kitchen
  • entryway & hallway
  • future DC bedroom
  • guest bedroom
  • DDs bathroom (I was thinking to continue the tropical fish theme)

So, any PIP of rooms that you LOVE would be awesome!!!

Background info: We have DD only so far, but plan on (hope for, PRAY for) another baby in the very near future (you hear that, eggs??? fertilize damnit!) and I have to paint the extra bedroom a color that would work for a future DC (gender neutral). Strange, I know. But we are renovating our entire house now, so colors have to be picked now. Won't have time to paint later (and really wouldn't want to). So, as you may be able to tell by DD's crib theme (Aloha Baby), we're not socially conforming with pink for girls, blue for boys...

So I painted her room like a light, bright aqua blue called something like Tropical Waterfall or something. Works for her decor of tropical fish and surfboards. But what color to paint the other rooms in the house? Our master bedroom is chosen already, and I'm guessing I'll paint DD's room a tropical color that would match her theme... or should I move her on since she'll be out of a crib in like 6 mos and stowe away the crib bedding for future DC? WWYD? Help!? TIATongue Tied

  • Ignore the DH and DS.  The walls in my family room are a goldish color and we accent with red.  Sorry I don't have any just "room" pics.

  • Our kitchen is blue and our living room is pale yellow.  You can see both of the colors in this picture:

(Ignore the horrible picture of DS Big Smile)

Here's another pic of the living room wall color:

    Here's our bedroom color:

The office's color  is a dark grayish green (we were taking pictures of morning hair Big Smile):

DS's bathroom (also the guest bathroom) is still white, but the shower curtain, towels, and rugs are bright green and blue:

    And DS's room color:

Eventually, our dining room will be painted red and our master bath will be a warm brown.  We haven't gotten around to painting them yet though!  Our guest room is still white too.  I don't know that we'll ever paint it.

  • Well, I guess it depends on a lot of things, like what is your style.  Are you more traditional in style, do you like bold colors, are you more neutral, do you like soft floral colors?   One thing that is important when choosing paint colors for a home is that they all flow together, like are the same tone.  For example, if your foyer is a dark taupe then maybe your dining room is a medium red and your kitchen is a medium yellow.  All these colors have the same tone to them.  If you like neutrals then stick with yellows, creams, browns, medium blues and greens.   Also, is your furniture light or dark.   Whenever I tell people to buy furniture I tell them to buy neutral because you can always add more colors with accessories like pillows, rugs, pictures, vases etc.   My best advice is to go to the bookstore and pick up some design magainzes like Beautiful homes, traditional home, home, style etc.   They may give you some inspiration.

  • I deliberately chose a gender neutral nursery theme. the walls were already lt yellow. we did an orange, yellow, blue goldfish theme.

we are also hoping for baby #2 and have decided to move DD into the blue room when new baby comes.

I already bought the happy children bedding (on sale!) from PBK and am happy about a blue/yellow/red/green bedroom for her.

So, my advice is to keep your nursery for 2nd baby and give your DD a new bedroom. If you paint the walls tan, white, lt yellow, lt green you should be prepared for almost anything. Most of our house is tan and I'm happy with that, a good background color.

  • Thanks for the great advice, everyone. However, now another question arises... Do I move DD into the larger bedroom at our new home (next to our master bedroom), and paint it to be the future baby's nursery then move DD into the smaller bedroom if/when I get preggo? Or, do I move DD into the smaller bedroom now (down the hall from us) and paint it to match the nursery bedding, then move DD into the larger bedroom if/when we get pregnant? OR, option C (LOL), paint both bedrooms with colors that *go* with the nursery bedding, and move DD into the larger bedroom permanently? Would it be a PITA to have a new baby down the hall and DD next door to us? Can you tell I have no idea what I'm doing LOL! Thanks!
