2nd Trimester

Dr. just called...low-lying placenta

Looks like from my ultrasound last week I have a low lying placenta.  My MW will send me for another ultrasound after my appt next Tuesday.  But no sex till then.

From Google, looks like it's common and there's a good chance it will move up as my uterus grows.

Anyone else have this, and what were you told about the risks?

Re: Dr. just called...low-lying placenta

  • I was told at my 20 week U/S that it was low lying, but just barely.  They told me that it usually goes up and not to worry.  I'm having a follow up U/S to check on it at 32 weeks.

  • I've had it since 13 weeks. My doctor wasn't concerned even though I'm already high risk, just said I shouldn't exercise and put me on pelvic rest, and said that if it stayed low I would need a c/s. More often than not ti tends to move up on its own I think.

  • Yeah, that's what I'm guessing from what I've read, and it makes sense since it would block the cervix.  I don't know if mine is or not.  I guess I'll find out Tuesday.  I haven't had any bleeding at all so that's good.  Just hope it stays that way.
  • I just had my 18 week US yesterday and the doc said mine is pretty low too.  She wants me to come back in 10 weeks to check on it.  What I was told was that it could move up on its own or it may stay low and I'll have to have a C-section.  I'm not worrying about it though, whatever happens happens.  I know our little boy is as healthy as can be and as long as he's ok that's all that matters to me!
  • I have a low lying placenta as well. From what I was told, they like the placenta to be at least 5 cm away from the cervix to be safe, mine was at 2 cm at 17 Weeks. When i went to our big ultrasound on Monday, it had moved to 2.3 cm away so hopefully it will keep moving. My doctors weren't worried about it either, just mentioned its something to keep an eye on, and I will go back for another ultrasound in 7 weeks. Apparently, like 90% of them move on their own.

  • Basically it should move up on its own.... a 90% chance.  If you start bleeding, call your doc because that could be a problem.  If the placenta does not move by 35 or so weeks, your doc will schedule a c section.

I had placenta previa since 12 week US.  It continued on through the 19 week US.  I was put on pelvic rest at 20 weeks. No sex, lifting, exercise.  My placenta moved up on its own by 23 weeks!  No more risk.
