2nd Trimester

XP: Car Seat Debate, with newer 32lbs models.

Ok...so I am definitly getting a Baby Trend Double Snap N Go...and I was originally going to get a baby trend car seat...but it appears that reviews of those are getting worse (although safety is high, easy to use/customer service are low).

So I am looking at a number of Graco models and some of the newer ones hold up to 32 lbs (but cost about $50 more per seat)...which would allow some additional time before moving to a convertable seat...

BUT I am not sure if they work in the DSNG...anyone know or have any thoughts/advice on this?

Anything would help right now...I am just so flustered and frustrated (probably first time mom nerves)

 Thank you

  • Honestly, your baby will probably outgrow the infant seat in height way before he or she ever reaches 32 lbs.  And you will find that the infant seat doesn't have many advantages after they are too heavy for you to be carrying them around in the seat.

You are going to get your money's worth out of any convertible you buy in the future, so I don't think I would pay the extra money for an infant seat that has a higher weight limit.

  • If you aren't set on the Baby Trend, the Graco SnugRider snap and go is designed to fit the 32 lb Graco infant seat.
  • I agree with the previous posters. By the time my boys were 6-8 months old, I was way ready to be done with the infant seat, there was no way I was lugging the infant seat with the baby around in it once they got that big and they were no where near 32 lbs (more like 15-18lbs). I think the weight and height limits are MUCH  more important when you move to the convertible car seat. I plan to keep my kids in those as long as possible before moving to a booster since the 5 point harness is much safer than the booster.

  • I have the Chicco Key Fit 30 and got that over the regular Chicco because it was rated up to 30 pounds. DS is 16 pounds and I am switching him to his convertible car seat this weekend. The seat is 9 pounds and DS is 16. I can't haul around 25 pounds anymore, it is too much. Not to mention I am pregnant and high risk so it is a bad idea.

  • Just wondering, when the baby gets to heavy to haul around, you can leave the infant car seat in the car and not haul the baby around in it. Right? I registered for the Graco Snugride 32 because it will last longer, and I figured that after a certain point, I would leave the car seat in the car (rather than carrying it out all the time) until the baby grew out of it and had to get a convertible. Am I wrong in thinking that this will work?

I was wondering the same thing.  Anyone?

I hope you're right, because this is my thinking, too -- someone, please chime in on this if you know!!

Not wrong... and it may work well depending on the next carseat you plan to get. we got the Britax Boulevard, and it was very comfy for my daughter even at 7 months- when she outgrew the infant seat in length.  But that's the cadillac of the carseats, and has nice cushioning and supports her head (she still fell asleep in the car a lot).  Other convertibles are not as cozy, and so I'd consider a longer lasting infant seat.  Is the height limit more, too?  We apparently make tall babies, so if the height is the same, I wouldn't waster the extra money.

Snugride is up to 29 inches and Safeseat and Snugride32 are up to 32 inches.

  • I don't think you need to get the 32 pound model.  Especially if you are having twins, they could be a bit smaller, and use a regular bucket for 6 months or so before you switch to the convertible.  My twins were 7 and 5 pounds, and still under 20 pounds each when we switched them to backwards convertible at around 6 months.  By the way, you'll love the double snap n go-so easy for getting out and about when they are still so small!  Good luck with your choice!
  • You won't be able to carry around a 32 pound kid plus a 10 pound carseat. At least not very far. It would be a nightmare to get in and out of the base.
  • I think you will be happy to get the lower weight limit carseat. By the time your baby gets closer to 18-20 lbs, it is very difficult to carry them in the carseat anyway. My son is at the top of the charts, and we just couldn't carry him once he was about 4.5 months old. We switched into a convertible carseat at that time and it has been great!

DS is so much happier in his new carseat. It doesn't bother some babies, but my son hated being reclined in his infant seat. He would cry during every car ride. Now he can look out the windows. I'm glad I didn't spend extra $ on a higher weight limit.

We have the Britax Boulevard carseat. When he was ready, we brought him to BRU and tried out several carseats. This one was the most comfortable for him and easiest for me to use. I was able to stack 3 coupons and saved $$$. I suggest waiting to get one until your baby needs it. That way you don't waste the carseat life while it's on the shelf. (This would be important if you are planning on having more children.)
