Does yellow mucas always= sick?

The boys started having teething pain about 3 days ago and had clear runny noses. Well today it is yellow. Does this mean they are sick?

Re: Does yellow mucas always= sick?

  • I believe that sometimes yellow mucous can just be "OLD" mucous. For example, if they just woke up from sleeping through the night and sit up and they have some yellow  come out, it might just be from sitting in there all night long.  I would say as long as it starts to run clear over the course of the day, it's probably fine. If not, call the pedi.

  • I always thought green (yellowish green)=sick.
  • No... green mucous usually = infection
  • OK, great news. They were just sick for three weeks! It's bad enough with them teething at the same time, we don't need sick on top of it:)

  • My friend was told recently by her ped that with babies and toddlers yellow doens't = sick like it does with adults.
  • Nope. I brought DD to the ped. because of green snot and she explained that the longer mucous stays in the nasal cavity, it starts turning colors. In our case green snot didn't mean infection or illness or anything. DD was perfectly fine.

  • PP have it correct...colored mucus doesn't mean sick.
