Kind of a dumb question re: milk/BM and MDO/daycare

I'm making the switch from bottles to sippies full time for DD.  At MDO, I send her with two bottles of BM, and a sippy for water.  Since I want to get rid of the bottles, I obviously need to switch that and not send bottles with her to school.

So, how do I do that?  Since BM is obviously already thawed and liquidy, do I send the two portions of the milk in two separate sippies?  Do you put it in something else and just let the daycare providers transfer it into a sippy?  Each portion of BM is 8 oz, so I don't even know if the little short sippies I have will hold that much.  Maybe I just need to get bigger ones?

Okay, I told y'all this was a dumb question, but I need help :)  It's the little decisions that kill me :)

  • I just send a sippy of water (to have with snack) and a sippy of milk (to have with lunch). Not that she drinks the milk anyway...she won't touch it. But I feel like I am supposed to keep offering it. I think I'm going to quit sending the milk.

Anyway, I'm rambling about my own woes ;) Do you think she needs the full 2 sippies of milk at MDO?

  • Are you still sending BM or whole milk now?  Her 1 year checkup is next week and I think I'm going to wait until then to intro whole milk.

Hmmm...good question!  She usually will drink one entire bottle and then most of the second, so I guess I just assumed she still needed it - but she probably doesn't.  If she's at home with me instead of MDO, she usually will nurse before her nap at around 10:45 am, and then not again until late in the afternoon, at which point she would already be home from MDO if it's a school day.  Maybe I should just try sending one sippy and seeing how that works?  I have just been doing what I've done from the beginning without a second thought!  I'll try that on Friday and see how it goes.  Worst thing is she's still hungry and needs to have a snack or nurse when I pick her up :)

What kind of sippy do you use?  We have two Munchkin ones, a Nuby, and a Munchkin with a straw.  I'm not sure the Munchkin ones would hold 8 oz of milk, but I suppose I can always buy new ones, huh? :)

I'm trying to cut back on daytime nursing sessions anyway just for convenience, although I'm not ready to wean yet, so this isn't a bad idea.

  • I used to do a thermos for the extra portion of whole milk.  I'd send one sippy of milk and then a thermos with the extra and instructions on when to give it.  Since breastmilk keeps so long even when it's not cooled, you could for sure get away with sending the two sippies of milk though.  The playtex sippies I buy hold around 7 oz. I think.

I am sending whole milk now. She wants nothing, I mean NOTHING to do with it.

I bet she would do OK with one sippy. When we were still sending a bottle with Natalie in the nursery on Sunday mornings, she would always take it. We stopped sending it a couple weeks before her birthday and she couldn't have cared less. Totally didn't even notice. So she might surprise you!

We use Nuby straw sippies. She cannot figure out how to use a valved sippy, although I think I'm going to try again soon.

We are down to one nursing session a day (a bit after she wakes up) and I have to say it's really nice. We still get that special time together, but it doesn't interfere with the rest of the day.

  • I send 1 sippy with milk and another with water..  8 oz is a lot of milk at once..  You should ask at your pedi appt, but ours said no more than 24 oz a day..  and 16 oz is enough..  We try to keep it at 20 ish... I send 5 oz of whole milk in a sippy..  He gets 4 - 5 oz (sometimes a little more) sippies a day..  1 before MDO, 1 at MDO, 1 when I pick him up, and 1 at bed time..  I wouldn't invest in larger cups..  I would try to cut down the volume or spread it out..

I haven't introduced whole milk yet at all, so we're still on breastmilk right now - hence the two 8 oz bottles. She usually sucks them down! But yes, when we start giving her whole milk, I'll do much less, I'm sure. Okay, well this helps a lot, ladies. Thanks!
