I just recieved notification that my UCCS email account will be disabled in 2 days. That is the account I use for everything. I am honestly surprised that they are not letting me keep it - I know it's quite common for schools to allow alums to keep their email accounts (I can even still access my UNC email and I graduated in 2002).
So, I need:
1) Suggestions about where to move my email to
2) Strategies for moving important emails over to the new account

Re: Gah! Big email problem
Copy all your existing stuff to a flash drive or external hard drive as back-up. Most mail services will have an option to merge an existing address book.
I've used Hotmail since 1998 so I don't have any recs...
I use gmail.
My school did that the second I graduated.

I recently moved to gmail. I was able to import all of my contacts pretty easily, but it was from a yahoo account. I really do like gmail's format - and you can retrieve it on a MacMail application, so I assume you can access it on outlook, a plus that yahoo didn't offer.
Gmail. They give you an incredible amount of space.
I don't know about the merging/moving--I usually ask my H to take care of that kind of thing for me.?
I use gmail for my e-mail. I'm not sure if there's an easier way to move everything over besides forwarding the e-mails to your new account.
One thing I would recommend is updating your e-mail address asap with things like Myspace (if you have an account). Because some of those systems require you to log in to your old e-mail account to finish the process of changing your e-mail.
P.S. You have PM.

I use gmail, and love it.
I am in no way tech savvy though, so I don't know about moving things over. I just forwarded really important things. . .

Is your old email outlook friendly? I have seen where outlook (and blackberry actually) will take the emails off the server and put them on your computer. Then you could save them on your computer.
Ditto everyone else about gmail. I really like it and don't get a lot of spam.
Yeah, that's probably going to be the best/easiest thing to do. I'll back everything up using Outlook
