2nd Trimester

Week 21 - are you changing your eating habits?

At 21 weeks, the baby can start tasting different things through the amniotic fluid.  WTE says: "researchers have noted that babies who were exposed to certain tastes in utero via the amniotic fluid were more eager to eat foods with that same taste after birth. Want your baby to eat his or her broccoli later?  Eat yours now!"

Are you trying to change your eating habits so the baby will be more accustomed to healthy foods?  Or, not so much?  I'm sitting here eating a spinach salad with boiled egg whites and balsamic dressing.  I'm wondering how long this phase will last!

Re: Week 21 - are you changing your eating habits?

  • I eat healthy for me, because I will be the one modeling good eating habits for the baby.  If I want her to eat healthy later in life I need to not only tell her to eat healthy but show her what it looks like.  If you're going to change to becoming healthy eater while she's in the womb get used to it, she will follow your lead on food choices.

  • I read that in WTE, and for some reason I completely missed that it started at 21 weeks. ?I have kept this in mind for a few weeks now when choosing foods - I've tried to eat seafood and ethnic foods (things that kids often don't like until they are older) with the hopes that the kid likes this someday, but I wonder how much it actually works . . .?

  • I didn't change my eating habits with DS. We have worked hard to introducing him to lots of different foods now though and there are a lot of things that he likes that I don't.

  • i haven't changed anything mainly because i eat fresh fruits and veggies (mostly steamed green beans, brussel sprouts and broccoli) every day.  but i'm also weird like that...
  • I was actually a really good eater before getting pregnant too, but I have found that since getting pregnant, my will power to reisit sweets has dwindled!  I'm trying to get back on track again, and I'm hoping the anmiotic fluid thing will kick me back into my better habits again!

  • I am trying to eat more vegetables.  Fortunately, that's a big craving for me with this pg.  With DD it was fruit and sure enough, she LOVES fruit.  What's funny though is she also loves chocolate and I could not stomach chocolate at all my entire pg with her.

  • I think baby changed my eating habits for me. With the terrible morning sickness I've had the only thing I could keep down was the healthy stuff especially lots of fruits and fresh veggetables. I like healthy food anyway but sometimes I just want some chinese food. lol
  • This is true...my son is a "green food junkie"  he loves broccoli, onions, cauliflower,  asparagus, believe it or not, brussel spouts..anything green.  I craved green salads all pregnancy long.  These are mostly foods my Dh doesn't care for.

  • If that's true then baby will love Cool Ranch Doritos, donuts, chocolate, BBQ and ice cream...just like his big sister!
  • I've tried to eat a variety of foods my whole pregnancy and will continue to do so. Although something tells me baby will probably like cookie dough since I've been eating a fair amount of that lately.

  • I absolutely do not buy into this line of thinking. My mom eats fabulously well and loves vegetables and I have grown up hating them. Likewise I only started to eat eggs and tomatoes in the last five years and these were completely off my list of foods I would even have on my plate.

I think children's food preferences are shaped more in childhood vs. in utero so I will continue to eat what I like - which happens to be whatever fabulous foods my former caterer of a husband makes me.

I will say that my own taste buds have changed dramatically while being pregnant. I adore garlic normally and can't even stand the smell of it now. Many juices taste like moldy fruit to me. Red Wine tastes like vinegar (and I only buy expensive red wine that others assure me is fabulous but not so to me) and have gone from loving lemon in the first few weeks of pregnancy to not being able to stand it now.

  • I hadn't realized it started at week 21.

I guess Brendan is going to like corn flakes and shepherds pie. Stick out tongue
