kinda crappy 6 month appointment

henry's 6 month appointment was yesterday. some of you may remember that we've been having trouble with him gaining weight, and yesterday was no exception. he IS growing length-wise and head circumference-wise, but in a MONTH, he only gained 4 oz. he's still less than 14 lbs. the doc is concerned, but she also noted that henry was a wild man (he was ALL over the place at the office), and that his mobility could have something to do with it. also, since i had the stomach virus during the month, my supply took a huge hit and we had to supplement with frozen milk for a few days (and henry won't take a bottle unless he's desperate).

it was kind of discouraging, but i'm not TOO worried because DH and i are both smaller people. i didn't hit 100 lbs til i went off to college, and DH is around 140 lbs. on the bright side, she said he looks GREAT for development, and she couldn't believe how much he was moving around and how cheerful he was. so i guess henry's second food will be avocado instead of sweet potatoes! gotta bulk him up!

Re: kinda crappy 6 month appointment

  • Aw, I'm sorry you weren't happy with the appt. But your reasons as to why he hasn't gained a ton make perfect sense.I'm sure mobility plays a big role!

If it makes you feel better, Maddie weighed 13 lb 9 oz at her 6 month appt, and then when we took her back less than 2 weeks later b/c I thought she had an ear infection, she weighed 14 lb 7 oz! Crazy. I was worried about solids preventing weight gain, but guess that's not the case for us.

Hope  Henry likes his avacados! Maddie was not a fan, lol.

  • I'm sure he will start putting on weight as you start with more solids.  Eli wasn't mobile at 6 mos, but when he did start crawling and cruising, his weight gain really tapered off.  And Henry's always been a string bean, so I wouldn't worry about it.  And I'm sure the stomach bug had alot to do with it to.  Keep up the good work!

  • Sounds like it all makes sense to me with you and DH's size and his activeness.

What did Pedi say about overnight feedings?

  • Sorry to hear the appointment wasn't great.  It sounds like you have some good reasons for his weight gain though.  Liam grew really fast for the first 6 months, about a pound a month, but according to our home scale, he's gained less than 1 lb since his 6 month appt (I'll find out for sure at his 9 month appt next week).  I'm not worried because he eats well and is healthy looking, and he too has gotten super active lately, so I'm sure that is a big part of it!

I hear ya, I would still feed him too.  I'm in no hurry for the books, unless we run into some major issues with this nap stuff. Yesterday she took no nap at all.  That didn't please my mom too much!  Whatever you want to do is fine!

  • I hope he gains some weight soon - it is stressful. ?I didn't really deal with it until 9 months, but she fell way down the chart then. ?She has only gained 4 pounds in 9 months, but I know that is okay because we are small and she is so mobile.
  • Try not to worry.  We're in a similar situation.  DD was tiny for her first two months, gained quite a bit from 2 to 6 months, and has hardly grown since.  She was bigger than Henry at 6 months but I bet he'll cruise past her by 15 months where she is now, if not by 9 months.  Our pedi told us not to worry by that point, that genes kick in.  DD is just lucky to have DH's genes, and it sounds like Henry has both of yours!  The first couple months were a different story, but by the time they get to be 6+ months, I think looking at genes is very relevant, plus issues like stomach bugs and time of day are factors too.  Many hugs...it's not easy.
