We always do ham salad and chicken salad on croissants. We also have crackers if people prefer that. We then do veggie and fruit trays. Very easy and showy.
We're hosting a shower in a couple of weeks and instead of mints, someone suggested doing fruit pizzas cut into small squares (think mini version!). I thought that was a tasty alternative to the standard cream cheese mints and nuts, and it's tiny food so very fun! The shower time is in the early afternoon, but it would work for a brunch time shower, too.
So girly, but can you do a tea party? I just did this and it wasn't hard at all! My family has a ton of china type dishes (that can go in the dishwasher afterwards!) I used to cups/saucers, three different tea pots with different teas (someone did ask for green tea and I didn't have it-sad) and I put out little snacks. I made butterfly shaped scones with mock devonshire cream, mini-cupcakes, cranberry bars, and a huge and pretty fruit salad thing. Ours was around 2:00 and we had about 20 people (small ish) and it was great! I loved using my families fancy dishes, and each of my grandmothers were represented in a small way with their serving dishes, which was special to me since they have all died.
veggie pizza (crescent dough rolled and baked flat, with cream cheese/mayo/seasoning blended and spread on it, then chopped fresh veggies on top, chilled. Check the Kraft website for that one. It's ALWAYS a fave.
veggies, chips and dips - like guacamole, salsa, onion dip, hummus
fruit trays with yogurt dip
a chocolate fountain? we had one at our wedding - it was messy but WONDERFUL for my guests
I always think a crockpot of bbq meatballs is necessary for any snacky gathering, as is crackers and cheese and pickles/olives tray
Since getting pregnant my food preferences have changed so much - make sure your BFF has some options that she loves and craves.
And finally, get some cheesecake and cut it up into bite-sized pieces... seriously. heaven.

I've hosted a number of showers and one thing that always gets raved over are my mini-wraps. Just get the large flour tortillas (like for enchiladas) spread with whipped cream cheese, layer in a few slices of ham (can use turkey) sundried tomatos and fresh basil. Roll them up, secure and section with toothpicks, slices and serve. They are easier to slice if you refrigerate them for an hour or so, which works perfectly cause they are done ahead of time.

The big warehouses like Costco and Sams Club have an abundance of finger foods that you just defrost, serve, and gobble up! Couldn't get much easier than that!
Re: Shower Food Ideas
A lot of the family showers I've been to have some sort of really awesome dip, like spinach or buffalo chicken (which is awesome by the way).
Oh yeah, and a cake!! Nobody is going to turn down a cute cake. OMG I want cake now.
