3rd Trimester

why, oh why, are people SO stupid?!?!? long pet vent.

this idiot coworker of mine just got a dog.  good for her.  DH and I both suggested she go through the SPCA because they have a cubic asston of animals that need homes.  she declined, and got her precious chihuahua from a puppy mill.

to each their own.  the owner of the puppy mill gave her dog his first shots, and she needed to take him to the vet for the second set.  she asked how much it cost, and I explained to her that any vet would charge a first visit fee sinceher dog had never been to a vet, in addition to the shot.  I recommended my vet, who is wonderful, and offers military discounts.  She said it was too expensive, but I guess she went there anyway.

then today she comes in griping about how much it costs to neuter and microchip her dog.  she said she was only going to pay for the next set of shots and not the other stuff because she wanted to breed her dog.

I don't disagree with breeding.  If it's done in a controlled, well educated environment.  BUT, breeding is generally more expensive to do than neuter, correct?

So I explain to her that 80,000 dogs and cats are euthanized everyday because there aren't enough people giving these animals good homes.  I also explained to her that you can go through our local SPCA to neuter, and it's WAY cheaper than the vet.

What happened?  she said, "my dog is too young to have sex anyway".

I can't take it anymore.

  • ugh. i cant stand people like that. all of our pets came from shelters. it breaks my heart to even go in one and not be able to take them all home. just neuter the dog for petes sake.

  • Hmm If she is complaining about the cost of shots and vet visits, how is she going to handle that cost when she does breed her dog and needs to take care of the puppies?

exactly!  I also looked it up and the first year of pet ownership costs, on average, $1, 347.  where is this b!tch from?!?!

  • Unfortunately you can't fix stupid!  I'm a veterinarian so believe me, I am really against breeding unless it's done appropriately to better the breed...and I'm sure the wonderful specimen she got from the puppy mill is not up to breed standard.  People need to understand what the commitment to a dog will cost before jumping in.  My guess this will be a poorly socialized, intact chihuahua who turns into a land shark.  I see this type of dog everyday and will talk to people until I'm blue in the face about responsible pet ownership but they never get it.  Sorry I took over your vent but I agree with you 100%!

At least at our local humane society, they counsel people on what everything costs before they allow them to adopt.  GAH.  Stupid.

  • We got our kitty all her shots, spay, flea treatment, the works at a really great deal through a local animal hospital because she was a rescue.  They even treated her hurt leg for free because we were taking wounded animal into our home.  Puppymills are so sad.  I'm not a big dog person, but I still think it is wrong to encourage these kinds of places.
  • wow.....she sounds like a real winner.  What are her reason's for breeding anyway?

she didn't give a reason.  probably because "he's so cute" or something along those lines.

  • Also, what is she going to do if the chihuahua isn't healthy and needs meds? DH's chihuahua has seizures, breathing problems, and bad knees.

yes, this.  Omino has a rare skin disorder we didn't know about when we got him.  We drop an additional $80 a month on top of his shots and other meds to keep it under control.  This woman is nuts.

  • we spend alot of $ every month on our bulldog and she is worth every penny...those kinds of people shouldnt have pets!!!!!! uggg
  • I agree if you can't afford them don't get them. My puppy had his 1st two round of shots and still ended up with parvo and is currently sitting at the animal hospital i work at getting better. Granted he is coming home tomorrow because we could it early but how will she afford a 1000 dollar treatment if she doesn't even want to spend the money to neuter him becuase it is too expensive.

My guess would be to make money. People like that make me sick! Breeding makes absolutely no since to me when there are SO many pets in shelters that need a good home. We got our cat and dog from a shelter. Our dog did have some issues to overcome (we're pretty sure he was abused) but now he's the greatest dog ever.

  • I think you should post this on the pets board. They can give you tons of resources to pass along to your friend about why she should neuter, and why she definitely should not breed this dog (aside from the costs involved, and teh fact that this is a less than perfect breed specimen, chihuahuas are very high risk pregnancy because they are so small). We aren't as crazy over there as people make us out to be, so don't be scared, lol

oh, I'm not afraid of the pets board.  But, as a side note, this woman is NOT my friend.

I've looked up a ton of resources and given them to her already.  Thanks though!  maybe I'll post it later just so they can see what an idiot she is.:)
