It does sound made up to me, but more importantly, it just sounds masculine to me. If I were a teacher and saw that name on my roll list I would expect it to be a little boy.

I don't see how people can say a common last name sounds made up. The John Madden reference does hurt the name quite a bit, but with all the Mady's of the baby world at the moment, I think it would fit in just fine.
