Babies: 0 - 3 Months

My 8wk old does not make eye contact or..

My 8 wk old does not make eye contact or follow objects. When i give him a bottle he does not look at me. I'm concerned, my cousin's 3wker follows lights, objects and stares at her when she feed her...

Is it normal for DS not to follow objects yet or look at me... When i talk to him he just looks away. Sometimes when i'm talking while standing over him, he will make eye contact.

Re: My 8wk old does not make eye contact or..

  • Have you been for your 8w check yet? That is a milestone they look for.

It is average for an 8w old to be doing that but there is a wide range for average. Let me go look in WTE the first year...

It says will probably be able to track objects and move head 180 to follow it, smile, squeal, bring hands together etc...

The only SHOULD is lift head 45 degrees when on tummy.

  • I think it's normal & is one of those "every baby is different" things. I asked my mom because my son rarely looks AT me... (she's a developmental psychologist) because I was worried it was a sign of something wrong with him socially -- but she said it's totally normal. I also read in one of my baby books that lots of babies tend to look at the outline of objects -- so when they look "at" you, they're just looking in your direction, not necessarily in your eyes.
  • Try tracking with high contrast objects (even if its a sheet of paper with black lines).  Go slowly and it may take a few tries.  If he never makes eye contact I would bring it up to pedi, but I have found that some children will make eye contact briefly but look away due to over-stimulation.

  • He makes great eye contact with my husband when my husband talks to him... Just not me or anyone else... He is cooing up a storm, smiling all the time... and lifting his head just great.. I'm just so worried about not following objects.
  • Oh, his 2 month check up is next Thursday. I called the doctors today to tell them my concern, and they said we would discuss it at his appt next week... Ugh! To make a worried mother wait a week, they are so mean :)
  • Since that is in the probably group and not the should group I would not worry. But def bring it up to your pedi.

Since he does make some eye contact I would not worry about that either, just yet,

  • As long as he's making eye contact with someone I wouldn't be too worried then.  Some babies aren't interested in tracking objects as much as faces (that is really the more important milestone and remember your baby loves your face)...will he track faces from side to side? (remember go slowly).

  • No, he doesn't track faces side to side, will only make eye contact if hubby is looking down at Cole. :( I hate that I have to wait until next week.
  • Waiting sucks, but I'm sure things will be fine.  I do evaluations of infants and children regularly so I was obsessed with checking things out with my child and worry daily but just remember that babies are emergent learners so your dc may know how to do those things, but just hasn't perfected it yet.
