Do all drs say this?

I was thinking about this today as thoughts of L&D are getting closer.  When I delivered Avery, I pushed for 10 minutes and was very calm.  I probably could have had a silent birth experience (with the drugs of course), but I did talk a bit.  I didn't scream at all or even raise my voice.

After it was over, the doctor and nurses told me how great I did.  So this morning, I started wondering if they tell everyone that or if I really did a great job.  I have heard other tales of women screaming their heads off and acting like a crazy lady and I was super calm...all this time I was thinking I did something stellar (kidding).

So - did your doctor tell you that you did a great job?  Do you feel like you really did?

  • my dr did say it to me, and I earned it (but really could care less if she thought I did good). and they probably do say it to everyone, but you were better then the average patient I'm sure. You're Haromny for pete's sake.

  • He told me that to on both kiddos but sounds like my labor was similar to yours.

  • I didn't know my doctor (on-call for the hospital), he didn't say anything.  My nurse told me what a fantastic job I did, but I certainly did scream.   I didn't have an epidural.

  • He told me I did a great job.  I didn't scream.  I did laugh when they were putting my legs in the stirrups.

Oh, I would have probably screamed my head off without my epidural!

  • Wow, I'm surprised you all remember. ?Post birth is such a blur for me. ?I can't remember what anyone said. I just remember being relieved it was over.

I can pretty much recount the 10 minutes of pushing and everything I said without much thought.  I am strange like that though.

  • With Elena and the epidural, they said I was doing a great job and a "do it just like that " when I figured out how to push the right way.  Don't remember any great jobs at the end though.

With Julia and no pain meds, I think it was really just a lot more exclamations about the speed of the whole thing -- I don't remember any "great jobs" from any part of that one.  (I don't think I screamed, but I did have a running commentary about burning and the like).  :)

  • I think we're all awesome. =) But I also think that most doctors say that. And I'm in awe of anyone that gives birth without an epi. I had contractions for about 6 hours without any drugs and I wanted to shoot myself. There's no way I would have made it without the epi.

  • My L&D nurse said I was amazing, but I think this was because I wanted an epidural and didn't get one.  I think all women who deliver babies are awesome.  :))

  • They said that to me too. I didn't scream for the first hour of pushing, but the entire second hour I was demanding everyone remind me of how painful it was if I ever thought about having a second child ;-)  I was also freaking out bc the heartrate was dropping and had to have an oxygen mask bc I was hyperventilating. Also, they kept trying to c-section me and I refused and got mad at them....even after THAT, they told me good job. So, I think they were BSing with me =)

  • We like to give positive feedback after deliveries.  But I do not always say they did a good job.  Frankly being kicked or screamed at does not equal good job to me!  :)   Some women enter the 5th dimension of hell or something when they are pushing.....they get crazy and scary.  I just tell them congratulations and am glad to leave!
