need more milk and major help!!!

Hi What can i do to produce more milk? My son is almost a month old and when i pump i only get 2 to 2 1/2 oz. When should i pump? He eats every 2 hrs? When is it going to get easier to handle? i get so frustrated sometimes because he nurses from each one at least 30 min. Am i doing something wrong?

  • I know it is hard the first few months but you can do it... you can try pumping after he eats that might help you build your supply. We all have ups and down you just have to try and stick it out.

  • are you drinking enough water?  That would be my number one concern.

I don't get much when I pump either, but it definitely helps to drink more water!

I give up trying to add my kids' photos. Just know that they are adorable.
  • Are you pumping while away from him? Or are you pumping in addition to feeding on demand?

I'm going to assume you are pumping to try and build a freezer supply. Pump after the first nursing of the day or feed from one side and pump the other. That is when you'll get the best production.

As far as the long nursing sessions go, that is what newborns do. Nurse on demand and that will be the best way to establish a good supply.

  • Sounds like you are doing great. If you are getting 2 ounces on top of feeding him every 2 hours you are getting plenty of milk. See this link

What is normal when it comes to pumping output and changes in pumping output?

Most moms who are nursing full-time are able to pump around 1/2 to 2 ounces total (for both breasts) per pumping session. Moms who pump more milk per session may have an oversupply of milk, or may respond better than average to the pump, or may have been able to increase pump output with practice. Many moms think that they should be able to pump 4-8 ounces per pumping session, but even 4 ounces is an unusually large pumping output.

It is quite normal to need to pump 2-3 times to get enough milk for one feeding for baby (remember that the pump cannot get as much milk as a baby who nurses effectively).

  • ditto pp - drink more water - have your dh help to make sure you are drinking enough even at night.

you have more milk in the am so try pumpking 1 hour after you nurse in the am.  I only get 3 oz and am finally happy with that b/c that is all the lo will take at a time anyway!
