For those who were induced....Epi before or after Pitocin started?

I saw a different Dr then my normal one on Monday and she was asking me if I wanted to get the Epi before they started the pitocin since it can cause painful contractions. (I am being induced).

She said that once the pit is started they would have to stop it to give me an epi and that it can slow down process of good contractions.?

?

What did you do? and how did it turn out?

?

Thanks?

  • Wasn't induced.. but get the epi sooner rather than later.

  • i was not induced but did get both pitocin and an epi. ?i received the pit around 10 am and did not get the epi until 2:30 pm.
  • Before, I think. I started with cervadil the night before and was already having contractions.

  • I got the pitocin around 8 am and got the epi around 2 pm
  • I got the epi well after the pitocin was started.

  • After.  Several hours after.  But my epi didn't work anyway.
  • I got my epi a couple hours after they started the pitocin. It worked out fine. I didn't even really feel the contractions too much before the epi, but I started to get a little uncomfortable around 3-4cm. They were going to give me that Nubane stuff, but my doc said to just do the epi.

Smooth sailing until pushing time :)

  • I waited until I was 8cm dilated to get the epi. So I was on pit about 12 hours until then. I wanted to go  pain med free but when I realized how tired I was getting I decided I wanted to try to at least make really good progress on my own before the epi. It worked out great for me :)
  • After.  The pitocin contractions were not really that bad for a long time.  They started pitocin at 9:30 am and I didn't get the epi until 3 pm.  I was between 5 and 6 cm when I got it, and it actually sped up labor.
  • I got mine after they started pit.  They broke my water and started pit around 7:30- by 9 I was in serious pain and I got the epi around 9:45.  It helped ALOT and I was fully dilated by 1.

    GL!!!

  • I went in with contractions but ended up getting Pitocin.  They would not allow me to get the Epi until I had started dilating more - and trust me I tried.

  • I had the pit first then the epi was started.  I wanted to go as long as I could without the epi though.  My OB told me the epi would slow things down but she told me only by about 20 min overall.  It depends on how your progressing in general.  After I had the epi they stopped the pitocin all together because my body took over and I didn't need it anymore....

  • They started my pitocin at 9 am and I got the Epi at 5 pm. I didn't even really feel contrations until about noon. So until I got my epi, I was able to walk around, use the ball, get in the bath/shower, etc.

When I did get my epi at 5 - I needed it!

Between 9 am and 5 pm, I went from 1 cm, 50% to 5 cm, 100%. Once I got the Epi, I went from 5 cm at 5 pm to 10 cm at 7 pm.

My midwife actually turned my pitocin off completely when I got my epidural. She let me labor on my own. Once your contractions are going, your body can take over. So I really don't see the point of avoiding turning off the pitocin for a few minutes. I can't see why it would have a major effect.

  • I didn't get the epi until I was about 7cm dilated, 8 hours after they started the pit.  I was in serious pain for about 45 minutes waiting for it though (I'd been on pit all day and they thought they broke my water but hadn't - so when they did, I had all that pit in my system and the contractions came on fast and furious)...

  • I waited wayyyy too long for my epi. Started the pit at 1pm, got the epi close to midnight. An 18 hour pitocin labor was NO fun, so thank god for that epi!!

Honestly though, the ctx weren't that bad until about 6 hours into it. But I have a pretty high pain threshold.... there's no reason to wait if you know you want one, so I'd just go ahead and do it unless you want to be able to move around in the early labor...

  • I was actually told the opposite.  Since I was induced I hadn't dilated much.  They administered the pitocin to begin contractions/dilation.  Once I was dilated (I don't remember how far), they then offered me an epi if I wanted one.  I waited until the pain of the contractions were up to about an 8 and then elected to have the epi.  They didn't want to give me the epi first because they wanted to make sure I progressed enough.

Regardless, contractions suck!  The pitocin and the epi did their job and I was able to push DS out in a little under an hour.  GL!

  • Cervadil (0-2 cm)-Epi (2 cm)-Pitocin (2-5 cm). Ended up w/ an Emergency C/S.

  • I was not induced, but I got my epi when I was at  6cm.  I stalled there for quite awhile and finally gave in (I wanted to go med-free)...after I got the epi, I was ready to push in 20 minutes.  So I guess my point is, even if you don't get the epi first, and want to wait awhile, if you do stall or get tired, the epi may actually HELP things along instead of prolonging it.

  • I waited on the epi.  I was induced on Monday, the contractions were really manageable until Wednesday afternoon (I just wasn't dilating).  At that point, they got very painful.  I asked for an epi and the anesthesiologist was there in 10 minutes; 15 minutes later I no longer felt contractions.

I don't know whether they stopped the pit (I didn't think they did, but I wasn't really watching), but I know since I was in labor so long, they stopped the pit every morning so I could eat and shower and it didn't seem to hamper progress.

Personally I would wait because if it's how it was with me, you would be unable to walk or move for days until the baby makes his/her entrance (for me, she didn't arrive until Thursday - imagine being bedridden that whole time).  And the contractions may not end up ever being that bad.

  • I got my epi when the ctx were so bad I couldn't catch my breath. I wasn't induced, but I was given pit to increase my ctx because I wasn't progressing well.?
  • 10 hrs after.

it ended in a c/s because of heart decel anyway.

  • As far as before or after the pit I'd say however you are feeling at the time.  I highly recommend getting it before they break your water though.  If it is anything like my labors that it was sends the contractions from tolerable to hellish, not any other interventions.

  • I went in the night before. Got the cervidil around 9 pm. Pit started around 8 the next morning. My water was broken somewhere around 11 and I got my Epi soon after because of the pain. I was fine until they broke my water. I was 4 cm when they broke my water. I ended up in a c/s around 12:45 due to my LO being breech.
  • I got induced around 2pm and waited until they broke my water at 5pm to decide if I wanted one or not. It turns out labor was not painful at all for me so I didn't even get the epi. Maybe wait until you are at least having contractions that are fairly regular to see if you are in the 10% of women who have a painless labor.

Ditto for me.  I didn't feel any pain at that point, but they recommended the epi b/c they were about to increase the pit to a high level.  I did end up with a c/s after no progress.  They turned off the pit when the baby's heartrate dropped.  Very scary.  Thankfully, all turned out fine in the end.

  • started pitocin at 6:30 pm monday, got the epi around 10am tuesday, i think?

  • I was induced (had my water broken and on pitocin), but never had an epi. I would hold off. You might not find labor that bad.
  • I had the epi several hours after the pit started.

  • I planned to go natural, but had to be induced since my water broke and contractions didn't start 24 hours afterwards. So, they started pitosin and I got to 7.5cm and only then had the epidural - so I got the epi AFTER pitosin. It worked like magic, I had a totally wonderful birthing experience with zero negative emotions.

  • I wanted the epi when they started the pitocin, but they wouldn't let me since I wasn't dilated or effaced (my water had broken 24 hours before). ?I begged every time I got checked. ?They had my drip cranked all the way up, so it was unbelievably painful from the get go for me. ?I was crying and wanted to quit the whole time. ?Finally after 4 hours of no progress, they let me have an epi and it was heaven. ?
