2nd Trimester

Cali, you are an elitist tool

I chose to donate my daughter's cord blood.  The odds of us needing it are very low.  By donating it, I chose to help other people.  Her cord blood will either be transplanted into a sick person, or will be used in research to develop new treatments.  And if she ever needs it and it is still available, we can still use it.

Not everyone has the money to spend thousands of dollars on something they will likely never use.  In fact, in case you are living with your head completely up your a$$, not everyone can even afford basic healthcare in this country.  People are losing their jobs right and left.  The economy is in the toilet.  So that's why not everyone chooses to bank cord blood.  Get over the moral superiority bullshit--having more money doesn't make you a better person.

  • I also wonder what happens to all this cord blood if the company goes under or the family falls on hard times and can't pay the bill.  And how do you know they are storing your cord blood properly?  What if you need it and they weren't storing it right and all the cells are dead or damaged?

They are just for-profit fear-mongerers, in my opinion.  If you want to bank with them, go right ahead.  But some of us have thought about it and chose a different route, for good reason.

    Ditto!
  • I saw less elitist and more naive, I think- there seriously are people out there that think private banking is relatively cheap.. the reason they think this is because they have somehow twisted the info to read: "Make your child invincible!" I feel sorry for them- cord blood is not a magic potion..

  • very well said
  • Bravo!

Perhaps if we had the money, we'd bank our cord blood. But at this time we plan to donate. We'll be paying over $700 a month for healthcare (family plan through the DH) and that's enough strain on our budget.

This is my very concern.  I am not convinced the private companies have our best intentions at heart during these two situations.

  • Hello - I didn't see the original post so I'm not sure if the whole debate is about cord banks you pay for (it sounds like it is) - I would just like to note, separate from all of this, that you can donate your cord blood after giving birth without paying anything (similar to donating organs) and it will go either to research or to another family/person that needs it. ?At the hospital I will be using, apprantly it's customary for them to ask you if you'd like to donate it for someone else. ?A good option for those of us who don't want to pay to have it banked for ourselves . . .?
