vent

holy medical bills. sigh.  I finally had time to review the medical plan from 2008, and it's a suck plan for our situation.  I did not anticipate this happening.  Our individual deductible in 2900 and the family is 5800.  then we have to start over for 2009. booooo

Re: vent

  • Oh no :(

You might ask to speak to a hospital financial counselor. I know one of the ERs I am familar with will knock 45% off the bill for someone who is willing to set up a plan and pay whatever they are able. I'm not sure if NICU would qualify for the same kind of thing, but it's worth looking into.

  • yeah we have one :/ We have the money (we are savers) so that's a blessing, but, it's still going to be a LOT.
  • Kathy, that sucks.  In addition to working with the hospital about reducing payments, you might see if you can set up something with your insurance company directly about adjusting your premiums or having something roll over and count toward this year's payments.  Just because you have the money in savings (and thank God you do!) doesn't mean that you can't try to save as much as possible :)

  • Agree with planningbug.

They have their share of patients who have no intention of ever paying any part of their bill, so they are usually willing to work with people who are both willing and able.

  • Does your company have what is called "4th quarter rollover," ?or something to that effect? It is if you meet the ded in the 4th quarter and incur bills in the early part of the year you are exempt from the ded in the next year. ?
  • Medical bills suck. That is so crapy about the 08/09 detuctible. You would think they could have a window, I mean it was just 2 days. I am a little glad that I had the D&C sooner since I didn't need to pay the detuctible, I was afraid I did, but my stuff added up. If I chose to wait till after the new year it would have been $1200 plus.

I agree that you should see if you can do payments so you can save the chunk of it. I vet they would be willing to work with you, or I would hope they would.

  • UGH that sucks! Make sure you document everything - you might be able to get some kind of deduction or write off or something on your taxes for next year (maybe??)

  • boooooo

Am I remembering correctly though that you were getting 8k back for your tax refund?  That ought to help.

  • the tax refund helps, but it's not like it's "free money" you know? we have the money, it's just frustrating how expensive all of this is, and how huge of a deductible we have for 2008 that we are going to pay all in the last couple weeks of the year, just to turn around and start over.  Doh!

I'll have to look into all your suggestions, I hadn't even thought about those!

We have a whole new policy for 2009 so I dont' know how that works.

  • medical bills = suck

ours our rolling in too and I have no clue how we're going to pay them

  • I'm sorry Jen! :/
  • Oh, I hate medical bills.  I've had a horrible time with mine, and I'm sure it's just a drop in the bucket compared to what you've got.  I'm glad that you guys are smart savers and have the money.  It doesn't make it easier though!  You'd think that since Andrew was born so close to 2009, that all of his portion of the bills could count towards this year.
  • I hate medical bills too!
  • Maybe you could argue that he SHOULD have been born in 2009? Stretch, I know. ;)
  • lol tricia!
