Do your pets know you are pregnant?

I seriously got asked this the other day.  My friend was convinced her lab knew she was pregnant and started being jealous and acting weird.  I never heard of this, but I have noticed that my one poochie (my closest, baby girl before DH) has been acting very strange.  She is very cuddly with DH and doesn't go by me much.  Before it was the complete opposite.  Maybe we are crazy (DH thinks she senses something), but I've heard stories about dogs picking up on cancer and illness.  Anyone else notice anything strange?  (My other two wouldn't notice if I moved out!)

  • With my DS my dog would sit on my belly! Seriously, I believe that she totally knew.?

  • Yes!! I totally think my dog has picked up on something "iffy". He has been acting very strange...he is a little weary of me but at the same time he wants to be in every room I am in and when he sleep at night he puts his head on my belly..which he never did before. He is acting very strange and jealous.....I totally think they know.
  • My moms dog knew i was. I kept telling her that her neice or nephew was coming and she looked at me all stupid. The next day she layed on my lap and kept rubbing her head on my belly. She has never done that EVER so i think she knows.
  • My little Anela (my shih tzu) has been more protective, attentive and clingy since a we found out. ?Before if someone would knock on the door, she would go and bark at it. ?Now, if she hears a bark she comes and stands next to me, or sits on me and barks. ?

  • the only reason my cats would know is because DH now cleans their kitty litter box. other than that...they don't "know" anything else is going on. I am sure once I have a huge ass and huge belly they will look at me a little different.
  • I'm pretty sure my dog knows as well.  I can't sit or go anywhere without him practically on top of me.  As a matter of fact, I'm on the couch and he has completely curled up inside the crook of my knees.  Not easy as he's a 57 pound boxer and I'm only 4'11.  He's never required this much attention and generally likes his space when he lays down.

AWW!!  My Phoebe is a shih tzu too!  It's almost like she is trying to be a baby, lots of cuddling, clingy, mostly with DH, but a bit with me when he is not around.
I'm so glad I asked this!  I love hearing about all your pookies!

  • My male cat, Sam, has lost his mind lately. He's attacked me twice and has started going to the bathroom wherever the hell he wants, which is not like him.
  • Mine puppy I sensed knew late in the pregnancy something was up.  I suspect b/c she laid on my tummy and heard all the noise.  But right now she is laying on my tummy and seem oblivious.

  • Its so weird.. but my dog definately knows Im pregnant!  Actually, he started acting weird a day or two before I got my BFP.  This happened with him with both of my pregnancies.  Hes gets super clingy and practically "guards" me!  He follows me everywhere, its pretty funny!

  • My dogs must be stupid. They don't know a thing.  Or maybe they do and they are angry/jealous so they're pretending that all is well.  Hmmmm.
  • Our dog is reacting to something.  I'm not sure if it's the pregnancy or not, but the last few weeks he has been misbehaving when we leave him.  He is a wonderful dog and his behavior has been so uncharacteristic of him.  He's definitely requiring more attention than usual.

  • My lab will not leave my side. He thinks I need assistance even going to the bathroom! The other two are the same, if I moved out they wouldn't notice. I think my lab is acting this way because he is currently the baby of the family and definitely gets out undivided attention. I'm not sure what he will do when the baby comes!

  • I sat both cats down and told them.  They seemed annoyed.
  • I love these responses!! Animals are SUCH treasures!!

My fat little beagle knows.  She is now SUPER aggressive on our hikes, which she hasn't been since I rescued her six years ago.

My terror-er-mix (formally the baby of the family), is blissfully oblivious.  My FI keeps joking that he's in for a rude awakening!! Personally, I think the crazy little creature will be happy for food on the floor and sticky faces...

LOL!  That is seriously what I thought my friend meant when she asked me if my dogs knew!  I was thinking she was nuts, like I'd have a sit down!

I don't know about you but my cat was that way before!!!  My mom keeps telling her to live it up as much as she can now because as soon as the baby is born she's number 2

  • I don't doubt the "6th sense" capabilities of animals who are close to you. My dogs have been much more clingy and lovey since I have gotten pregnant. When I take naps on the loveseat, they come over and sniff all over my belly.  They know something is going on!
  • Yes, one of my cats who is normally all over my DH is constantly crying for my attention and wanting to cuddle with me.  DH and I talked about it the other night and we said she must sense or smell the rising hormones in me.  How strange but cool!

Same here.  1 of my cats is all over me now and he was definitely DH's kitty before this.  He just hops up on my lap and wants to be cuddled, and he is not a cuddly cat.  I can see a difference since I've gotten my bfp.
  • My golden seems to know.  Usually he is all over DH but lately he sticks to me like glue.  I find myself tripping over him more that usual,  it's like he's guarding me.
  • I dont know if they know, but one of my cats has this habit of climbing on me when I'm asleep - I often wake up to find her sound asleep on my stomach. However, she has hardly done it at all for the past few weeks, so maybe she knows? Or maybe its just the bloat that makes it too uncomfortable!

  • I totally believe they know ! i have 2 Jack russels. And They can't stay off of me... The one loves to lay next to my belly... she absolutey insists on being next to me. The male dog, he seems to get very protective, he gets mad at her for being to close. They are so precious!

  • My dog knows something, she was very attentive during my last pregnancy and was particularly careful and clingy during my miscarriage.  But now she has made a new habit of laying across my neck instead of across my stomach...   She used to be very jumpy on me and would play a lot across my body but now she is just very soft and sweet with me but jumps all over my beloved!!!
