Foremilk/Hindmilk

I know there's no clear differentiation between foremilk and hindmilk (like hindmilk starts after X minutes feeding)...but does anyone have a ballpark idea when the hindmilk begins during a feeding?  I wonder if DD gets enough of the fat-rich hindmilk.

Re: Foremilk/Hindmilk

  • I have no clue when it starts and DS has become a pretty fast eater lately - done in 7-10 minutes.  He hasn't had any green poop yet so I'm assuming he's getting the hindmilk.

  • It is usually the darker whiter milk...  not the clear stuff that seems to come out during let down.
  • From what I have read - it is somewhere around 5 minutes. ?

Obviously there is a big difference on how efficient the baby is, how forceful your letdown is, etc. that would affect how quickly your DD would be getting hindmilk. ?As long as there are enough poopy diapers and she is gaining - she is getting plenty to eat (hindmilk) and getting enough wet diapers means she is getting plenty to drink (foremilk).

  • The breast pump does it's let down phase after 2 minutes.  This seems to be the deal with my breasts as well.
