Just home from hospital with breastfeeding question

I also posted this on the breastfeeding board.  We just got home from the hospital this afternoon.  My baby girl has been doing really well with breastfeeding and we've had a lot of help from the lactation consultants.  This afternoon, she's quickly gets really, really upset when I put her to the breast.  She will start sucking and within 10-20 seconds, she starts crying.  My milk is not in, and I'm wondering if she's getting frustrated.  Any thoughts?  I knew this would be hard, but it's even worse than I imagined to see her so upset.   She's clearly showing signs of hunger.

  • My guess when reading this is that she is getting frustrated. We had the same issues until my milk came in.

  • Breastfeeding is HARD and I went through the same things. Don't feel like you are alone or doing anything wrong. I supplemented my baby with Similac Advance and he had no issue with taking a bottle and then switching back to breastfeeding.  I actually had to supplement for the first week and a half until I was producing enough milk. You could try that. Good Luck to you!
  • I experienced the same thing until my milk came in.  Now she's latching like a champ.  Also, be careful about putting your hand on the back of her head.  My doula and the LC said there is a reflex there - when you push on her head to direct her to the breast, she will reflexively push back.  Once I learned that, it made a big difference!

  • we had the same problem with my ds. he would be so hungry he'd get frustrated that all he was getting was little drops of colostrum from me. we would supplement about 10-15ml of formula with a syringe to calm him down a little. then afterwards he would nurse just fine. good luck.

This 100%. We had a very rough first night during the time when DS went thru the colustrum (sp?) and when my milk came in - he was screaming he was so frustrated. Hang in there!

  • Thank you!!!  I really needed some encouragement and to hear that if we end up needing to use a little formula in a dropper or syringe, things can work out okay.  Yes, this is definitely the hardest thing so far, but we're trying our best to stick it out.
