Baby's hearts don't start beating until 12 weeks

That's according to front desk at my OB/GYN's office.  Confused  This is what I was told when I asked if I would get to hear the heart beat at my first appointment, I'll be 9 weeks then.  It's also to early for an u/s, according to her.

This does not give me great confidence, I can only hope it's no reflection on the doctor.

Re: Baby's hearts don't start beating until 12 weeks

  • I heard my babies HB at 9.5 weeks. Loud and strong :) That is strange they would say that!

  • Did you tell her that she's a crackpot. I would definitely be a little leary of my doctors office if somebody that worked there said this to me.

  • She probably meant her Doppler doesn't work till 12 wks.  As for an u/s if you are not high risk it is often normal not to get one before 18 wks Sad

  • Perhaps she should say that they don't do u/s that early and that they prefer you wait until you're farther along to do one. If she really meant what she said, I would find a new OB.

  • Receptionists aren't medically trained, obviously.  She should have worded it differently.  She probably meant "we don't try to listen for the heartbeat until 12 weeks."  I just had my appt today at 10 weeks and we easily heard the heartbeat with the Doppler.

  • I just posted something similar right after you! ?We have the same frustrations! I think I might be calling back tomorrow to get more answers and hopefully talk to someone else.... ?Good luck!
  • Then my baby is way ahead of everyone's baby cuz my baby's heart beats like thunder.

  • I thought it was around 6 weeks? ?I know it's easier to hear the later you are though. ?Definitely before 12 weeks though!
  • wow, yeah my OB's front desk told me they couldn't see the babies HB til 12 weeks. ?This was AFTER I had been in the the week before and seen it at 7 weeks!

Maybe they were both confused and meant to say you can't hear it on a doppler til about 12 weeks. ?Lets hope.?

  • Ugh, I would find a new practice. The last thing you want is to call into the office and ask that lady a question.?

My first u/s was 9 weeks and 1 day. I had an internal u/s and we not only saw is heart beat we heard it too, a strong 166 bpm. ?

  • I heard mine at 5 weeks and 2 days via ultrasound....I think you need  a new Doctor.
  • Wow.  Time to find a new Dr. that went to Med. school.  I heard my baby's heartbeat at 6 weeks 4 days.
  • I don't think you should judge a Dr on the front desk.  See how you like the Dr first and then decide if you want to stay with the practice or not.

  • I didn't hear the baby's hb until around 11 weeks with a doppler, but I saw it flickering away at 6w2d via ultrasound.. it was definitely beating then.
  • Wow is she ever misinformed.   We saw the heartbeat at 6 weeks.
  • shes a smart one

we saw babies heartbeat at 7w2d

  • Just remember folks, anyone can be a receptionist but it takes YEARS to become a DOCTAHHHHHH
  • Mine said something similar.I had an u/s scheduled for about 7 weeks and I said I hope I hear the hb, she said its too early. I saw the hb on the u/s and then I realized she was thinking of the doppler not the u/s. Sounds like she is talking about the doppler not the u/s.
  • she must have been confused on when you can hear it vs. see it...you can see it VERY early...probably 6weeks ish I saw ours at 7 in the ER
  • No, it's you cant HEAR it beating until 12 weeks
  • let me assure you -- the people who answer the phone at the doctor's office are not medically trained. ?they are not the people that you need to ask medical questions of -- now if the nurse or doc had said that, fine. ?but please realize, it can be difficult to find good front desk staff for many offices... not necessarily a reflection of the doctor.

  • It could be that they mean that you wouldn't be able to hear it until then - it can be seen on ultrasound somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks but can't be heard until 12 weeks or so. I dunno, maybe they are confused? I know I am by the response they gave you!
  • We saw our baby's heartbeat at 5 1/2 weeks and again at 8... We haven't HEARD it yet, but we can see it flashing on the U/S...
  • I have my first u/s scheduled for 9 weeks and my dr said "we might be able to hear it since you're thin" at that point but she also said usually you can't hear it until about 12 weeks...
