Bf'ing mom's who supplimented formula

Did it take a while for your little one to poop? I just started giving him a bottle of formula a day (sometimes a couple depending) and my son hasn't pooped since yesterday morning, and yesterday was a smaller amount than normal. Has anyone experienced this or should I call the doc? any advice to get him to go besides drugs?

  • DS poops every other day usually, rub his tummy, or stimulate him with a rectal therm.

  • Thanks for the help :) I really didn't want to give him formula and he doesn't like it very much either. I returned back to work and I just couldnt produce enough to make the bottles for when I am gone. I don't mix it i just give him the formula when I run out of the bm bottles.

  • dd is breast fed and when i supplimented with formula the iron constipateed her.  She went 5 days with no poop.....dr didnt seem worried....i gave her half an ounce of gerber apple prune juice and she pooped 45 min later
  • I also started supplementing with Organic Similac and my DS went 24 hours without pooping. I was really worried and called the doctor. He recommended the 'rectal stimulation' as others indicated. He recommended that I dip the thermometer in Vasilin and hold it in baby's butt for 10 seconds. Then take a cotton ball with warm water and hold it at the anus for a little bit (this should help the baby relax down there).

Then, we pumped DS's legs a bit (as if to release gas) and he pooped right away! Just be sure that you do this when the baby is 'ready to poop' (for us, this meant when he got super fussy and starting grunting a bit).

    Good luck!

  • For me, it seems as if since we've started supplementing, he has been having more BMs! There was a period of time when he was your LO's age though that he seemed to go for several days without having a BM. I wasn't too worried b/c I think I read that their digestive system was just maturing.
