how many times a day do you feed?

we were late starting dd on solids, but we're now successfully giving her peas, bananas and sweet potatoes.

how many times a day do you give dc solids? and did you cut back on the formula?

Re: how many times a day do you feed?

  • We just bumped Gabriel to twice a day.  At this point formula should be her main source of nutrition.

  • We started Char right before six months old, and we fed her solids once a day I think for about a month, then we went to twice a day (breakfast and dinner), and then I think we went to three times a day not too long afterward. ?No, I didn't cut back on nursing at first because that was still her main source of nutrition. ?I would say we significantly cut back at around 9-ish months, when she started eating meat/protein (per the pedi's recommendation). ?She simply didn't need as much milk from me since she was getting most of her nutrients from solid foods. ?Now, at almost a year (in two days, OMG), she is eating three solid meals a day, plus some snacks, and nursing 2-4 times a day (yeah, she loves nursing!). ?

I would give her solids just once a day for at least a few weeks, but don't cut back too much on formula. ?Once she goes to three meals a day, then I would start cutting back (she'll let you know still when she wants it - Charlotte lets me know when she wants me as opposed to solid food) on the formula. ??

  • Between 7 and 8 months, both kid's feeding schedules were somewhere along these lines.

    Wake - 6-8 oz. bottle

30 minutes or so later - rice cereal mixed with fruit (around 1 full jar of baby food and 1/4 cup of cereal.  got to a 1/2 cup of cereal around 9-10 months)

    10:00ish - another 6-8 oz. bottle

11:30ish - rice cereal mixed with veggie (same combo as above)

after afternoon nap - another 6-8 oz. bottle

5:30ish - 1 jar of veggie and 1 jar of fruit for dinner (didn't always eat it all at first)

Bedtime - small bottle (eventually dropped this around 9-10 months)

  • Grant is 9 months old, eats solids 3x a day and still has 5 bottles a day (always has). If you look at the calories in baby food, it's next to nothing, definitely don't start cutting out bottles just yet. I think around 10/11 months is ok, when they start eating more "real" foods.
