I have What to Expect When You are Expecting on loan (from a friend, wishful thinking). I noticed that it has been revised (finally) when I was in Borders the other day...
Anyone have an opinion as to whether it would be worth my while to buy the new one based on their experiences?
TIA
Re: Q from a GPer (don't worry, not fishin')
I have it, but I like Your Pregnancy, week by week a lot better! GL
Sorry, I didn't really answer your question. I don't know how much of the information changed from version to version.
I really didnt enjoy WTE either. I felt I got the same info online from the week-by-week websites and it was in a much more enjoyable format.
I did get Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy and its not too bad at all.
If you're going to buy a book, I would suggest Week by Week or the Mayo Clinic guide.
WTE seems outdated and a lot of the info is scarier than it needs to be. ?For the first few weeks, it seemed like every symptom I looked up was cross-referenced with MC, and it did a lot more to scare me than it did to help me.
I also think it's organized poorly. ?I'm sure it used to be the gold standard, but it gave a lot of conflicting information. ?It also gave info that was very different than the info my doctor gave me.?
I did a major search on the boards to see what people have recommended. I did not want to waste money on buying a bunch of useless books and the list really helped.
This is what I came up with:
Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy (good book to read about pregnancy in a non-medical way, like a "girlfriend" telling you. Available at my library, so I did not buy.) Recommend
Your Pregnancy Week by Week (Great book for idea on size, what is going on week by week, excercise ideas for the week, what to avoid, etc. Everything you need to know medically without being too medical. Library, but will buy) Recommend
Mayo Clinic, Complete Book of Pregnancy (Good, similar to Week by Week, library)
WTEWE (I have not read it completely, but I have read a million reviews - both here and on Amazon. Interestingly enough on Amazon, it was a whole lot of husbands saying that it was the worst, putting all these bad ideas in their wives' minds, kind of like, "here is the worst you could potentially expect" Also, it is supposedly very condescending and people complain that the author isn't even a doctor. If you go on Amazon, you can see ALL the complaints. I think people would have a book burning party, that is how anti WTEWE these people are. I took out of library, but will return. I like others more.)
Jenny McCarthy's Belly Laughs (I will take this out next, supposed to be good along the lines of Girlfriends Guide)
Hatched! (VERY VERY adorable book with pictures of chicks giving birth, complaining about husbands, very worth a trip to library.)
I also have taken some out on being green/your moods while pregnant/managing morning sickness/eating during pregnancy and scanned through them, but won't be buying. I think YPWBW or Mayo Clinic is the best for buying. The rest are good to take out of the library. I have never used my library so much, but I am saving hundreds, so it is worth it!
GL!!
WTEWYE is nothing but scariness. ?Seriously, you'll get better info here from the boards, or through WebMD, Mayo Clinic, or your doc's office.
If you want something short and fun, I recommend The Pregnancy Instruction Manual. ?It is the anti-WTEWYE.
?These are also the people who bring you The Baby Owner's Manual, another funny book. ?They give good info, but aren't about scare-mongering.?
Also, WTEWYE is aimed at the puppies and rainbows crowd.?
No puppies and rainbows here. So, the consensus is new, recently released WTEWE is just the same ole crap with a new cover? Thanks for the warning.
