Hospital clothes ? from 2nd trier...

I have a question ladies...

Do you think it would be smart to just buy the little gowns for the hospital or buy the actual top and bottom nursing sets? I'm torn because what if I have a c-section (I'm not going to want to wear pants around my incision)? Either way I'd be wearing a robe (cause it's so freakin' cold in hospitals).

Re: Hospital clothes ? from 2nd trier...

  • honestly i wouldn't buy anything to wear in the hospital.  just wear the gowns they provide because everything gets messy and bloody.  they can give you nursing gowns.  i only brought a change of clothes to go home in.

  • I would not buy any special clothes for hospital.  Use their clothes.  The clothes will get messed up.

  • if you are a gown person and would wear it at home, it wouldn't hurt.  i had a c/s and was actual most comfortable in pants.  it felt best to have something snug up against my incision.  i wore maternity yoga pants and nursing tanks for three days in the hospital (eg: as soon as they let me put on my regular clothes).  but i have heard a lot of people just wear the hospital gowns.  a robe is a must, imo.
  • When I was in the hospital, I just wore their gowns.  That way, I didn't have to worry about bleeding on my clothes.  And hospital gowns are GREAT for breastfeeding.

You could get either or both and if you don't wear them in the hospital, you can use them at home.  You will definitely want comfortable clothes that have easy boob access for the early weeks and for nighttime.

Oh and I had a c/s and never had any problems wearing pants, but I know some ladies do.

  • I had a c-section and wore pants. I just pulled them up a little higher than I usually would.
  • I had a c/s and wore yoga/lounge pants and nursing tanks the entire time, except for sleeping at night. It was easier to wear the hospital gown because they came in to check you. It never bothered my incision. I was also up and walking around by the next morning and you did not want to see my legs. Got pg in Feb, had baby in November. Those suckers hadn't seen sun in a long, long time.
  • Personally, I would waste the money on either. I just used the hospital gown they gave me. I took pj pants with me but didn't even put them on b/c they check you so often it would have been a pain in the ass (and everywhere else lol) to take them off everytime they check you. The pants you could always roll down in case of a c/s.

But if you really want to buy one or the other, I would go with the gown, as I said before, the pants will get in the way (if you have a vaginal birth).

  • Everyone is different. But, I took my own pj set and nursing gown. I didn't buy the pj's new, but the nursing gown was and none of my stuff got messed up or bloody. I also only got checked one time (nurse looked down my pants) so I wasn't constantly having to pull them off. Of course I had a vag. delivery - not c-section. It felt good for me to have my own clothes to wear, especially when we had family visiting the next day.
  • Ditto pp's, I wouldn't but anything for the hospital. Maybe a cheap robe (that you don't mind gets nasty) for when people visit but other than that I would say wear what they provide.

  • Depends what kind of birth you have.  I wore the hospital gown the first day because it's a messy, rough day.  I had a c-section so was in the hospital for 3 more days.  I had pants, but would have preferred a gown...not because of the scar, but I was still hot (you'll probably get hot a bit later in your pregnancy) and it was hard to bend over to pull pants up and down.

  • I had a c-section and I wore their gown the first 3 days I was there.  I did wearing the Medela sleep nursing bra on the 3rd day b/c I kept leaking and I needed to wear nursing pads.  My last day there I finally put on yoga pants and a nursing bra.  But now I think about it, I did bring a robe that I put on over my hospital gown when I had visitors.  Don't bring too much! I did...and hardly used any of it.  I am sure most ladies on here would agree....

  • I was one of the people that did wear my own gown. I was so over the hospital gown on the 2nd day and wanted my own clothes. I felt so much better with my own stuff on. I id get a gown because the huge pads they gave you was kind of uncomfortable with pants. This is the gown I got and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it...I still wear it. https://www.nursinggowns.com/gowns.htm
  • oh...p.s...I got black just in case there was some leaking.
  • I went against reasonable logic and bought two gown to wear.  I knew I wouldn't be able to stand the hospital ones and I was right.  I wore my gown the morning after labor after my frist shower and loved it!  I didn't mess it up either.  I didn't spend too much on them because of the fear of ruining them.  I STILL wear them and am glad I bought some of my own.  I just felt better.

  • Um, neither.  Just wear their gowns.  Do you know what kind of stuff you'll be leaking onto *anything* you wear after you give birth?

I ended up having a C/S and I would suggest brining some other clothes just in case.  Towards the end I needed to get out of the hospital gown to feel human so I had a pair of pants and top to change into.

  • I wore the hospital gown the first day and wore some old pajam pants and a nursing tank the second day (with a robe).  I wouldn't buy anything new, it might get ruined.
  • I just bought 2 pairs of cheap pj pants and a cheap robe from Target. I wore those and a nursing tank the entire time. FYIW, nothing I had ended up messy with blood or anything so get what you think you will be comfortable in.

  • I bought a black knit robe (just above the knee) from Gap and wore it the whole time.  The hospital gown depressed me.  The black robe hid the blood, though the pads I wore were so huge that I barely had any "situations" anyway.  (I had a forceps delivery, FWIW.)

Like pps, I also wore (black) yoga pants, but I don't remember when I started doing that.  Friends came to visit so I wanted to have actual clothes on.

The key is to buy black stuff so you won't see stains if they occur.

A lot of nesters post not to bring clothes, but if you're someone who wants to have your own clothes--and pillows, and slippers, etc.--like I did, you should bring them or you might be sorry you didn't!

  • I would get the nursing set.  I changed out of the hospital gown the minute they let me get up and go to the bathroom.  The nurses actually teased me that I was ready to go home already.  I wore pants and a nursing shirt and I was much more comfortable.  I did bring my robe, but never wore it.

  • I wore the hospital gowns with #1 and was so uncomfortable. With #2 I wore yoga capris and nursing tanks and I felt like a whole new woman. If you're already feeling crappy, somtimes something you're comfortable in can make all the difference. Plus, I wasn't wearing the hideous hospital gown when we had visitors and my MIL was snapping hundreds of pics.
