NBR: Do you recycle food waste?

If so, how do you do it?  We dont' have any yard waste, so I hate the idea of putting food scraps in there and getting the bin all grody and having it sit there just asking for raccoons to come knock it over for dinner.  Plus, since yard waste pick up is only every other week now, it seems gross to have food scraps sitting around for 2 weeks at a time.

So tell me, what is your system?

Re: NBR: Do you recycle food waste?

  • We have a compost bin in our yard.  When i lived in bellingham they had seperate buckets you could get for food waste.  Do they have that here, maybe?  You can buy compost canisters too (they have them at crate and barrel, for instance).

  • I haven't done it yet because it just seems so messy and like you said, is just asking for raccoons!  We got my BIL a countertop compost bin for the kitchen.  It's an attractive ceramic pail with charcoal filters to keep the smell down.  I'll have to ask him if he is using it and what he thinks and let you know.  I do think it sounds easier than taking stuff out to the bin all the time as long as it doesn't smell.
  • We do it.  I use a brown paper bag (inside of a plastic bag) which I keep (with surprisingly no smell) under the sink.  Every couple days I dump the brown bag with food scraps in the yard waste bin. The bags just compost with everything else.

  • Oh, the plastic bag part is to keep the brown bag from falling apart in transit to the yard waste bin.  We throw our coffee grounds in there too and those are usually pretty wet.

  • We have one of those countertop pails with the filter in the lid (ours is stainless) and they sell bags at places like storeables that are compostable plastic (made from corn?) that we use to line the pail so it doesn't get grody. We put the contents in our compost pile but the bag can just as easily go in yard waste. Before we did that, I kept a large zip-loc in the freezer and tossed scraps in there, emptying it into the compost pile when it got full.?

Some of those plastic salad greens containers are actually made from corn and biodegradable; I've kept them and used them in the freezer the same way. You could use those to put out stuff in the yard waste bin mess-free.?

  • We have a green tub under our sink that food waste goes into but we also have worms in the garage that eat most of our food waste. They don't get citrus or meat though... that goes into the yard waste bin. It's not for everyone but it's easy to do and we've had them for about 5 years now.

Our outdoor yard waste tub is huge and the racoons we have around here don't bother it thankfully. Have they bothered yours?

  • We just keep a regular trash can under the sink and throw scraps in there and then dump it into the yard waste bin every few days. The yard waste bin is in the garage so there is no risk of racoons or anything.
