When to start milk

When did you start your dc on milk? What type did you use?

DD turns 11 months tomorrow and I'd like to start milk, is it too early? I'd like to replace one bottle per day each week with milk, so by 1 yr she'll be on all milk. Thoughts?

Re: When to start milk

  • Check with your pedi.  Our doctor said it was fine to start transitioning slowly a few weeks before her birthday.  Your doc may have a different opinion, though.

  • Our pedi said one year, but he is a fairly conservative doctor also, so I was just curious as to others suggestions.
  • DS's ped. said that we couldn't start until he was one to drink cow's milk.  We just started giving it to him in a sippy cup and he loves it so far, though it did take a few tries before he was all that interested in it.  It helps to warm the milk a little, DS is much more receptive if it isn't ice cold.  HTH
  • DD's pedi said we could put 1 oz milk in each of her bottles started at 11 months if we wanted to.  We've been doing that.  I've also given her a sippy of just milk a few times in the last couple weeks.  DD's 12 month appt is tomorrow, so I figured it would be ok. I think it would be better to only give a little milk until they're one because milk doesn't have as many of the other nutrients that they need.

  • We started giving small amounts of milk when he turned 11 months. We used the last of our formula last week. So he's on milk completly now...taking in about 18-20oz a day. He LOVES it!  I'm not too concerned about starting a week early because he eats 100% table food now is and excellent eater. He LOVES veggies...I wish his big brother did!
  • I BF until 13.5 mo, but gave DD a sippy of milk at meals starting at 10 mo.
