Moms of 2+: New bottles?

I used Avent bottles with Lily before the whole BPA thing.  Should I just get new nipples for the bottles I've saved or buy all new ones?

I'll admit I haven't done all of my homework about the BPA bottles, but isn't there only an issue when they are heated in the microwave?

  • According to my DH who is in research, the chemical only leaks out of the plastic if it is heated to extreme temps.  I used drop-ins so I never really gave it a second thought.  But I would do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

  • I'd just buy new nipples, but I'm not overly worried about the whole BPA thing.
  • I'm also not overly worried about BPA, but there was a time people were not overly worried about things like lead or cigarettes either.  I know that sounds kinda extreme, but I figured if a store was willing to pull all of their bottles with BPA off the shelf and replace already used bottles with BPA for free, then maybe I better go ahead and replace my bottles.

Kessler - or anyone else -

Do you know if BRU is still replacing old bottles?  I'm headed there today.

  • I have no idea, but I know that Avent now makes BPA free bottles and I don't think they did when Dr. Brown's came out with their BPA free bottles (that is the kind we had) so maybe it just depends on when the manufacturer supplies the store with their BPA free bottles?  I would call and ask, and if they say that they were doing this awhile ago but aren't doing it anymore, maybe put up the argument that you have Avent bottles and they didn't have BPA free bottles at that time.

  • Amanda - I would call and speak to a manager at the BRU.  They gave me a store credit for the dollar amount my bottles were worth, but they still had those bottles on the shelf at that time, they had not switched them out yet.  I would switch.  If you still like the Avent, I really, really recommend the Avent VIA containers, and they are bpa free.  I use them to pump directly into, store in the freezer, and they come with an attachment piece to screw onto the nipple.  They have flat lids and are stackable for storage.  Plus they are great snack cups too!
