Breastfeeders who use formula too

Anyone give formula to baby just in the evenings? Does it make them sleep longer? I'm considering giving 1 bottle of formula just before bed but not sure if its worth it and hate to waste the money trying. Just looking for some opinions.

Thanks !

  • We do.  DS has major sleep issues but it works sometimes.  Pedi recommended it for reflux.

  • DD got formula and BM at various times.  It did not seem to have an impact on her which one she got, as long as she got as much as she wanted.  You could always try BF, then giving 2 oz of formula right after to "top off" and see if he would even take it.  I did that with DD for a while when I had supply issues and she wasn't gaining weight.  Then I would pump to "make up the difference", so eventually my supply would (in theory) catch up.
  • When ds was about a month old he got formula in the middle of the night to give my boobs a break.  Also, it made it so dh and I could take turns getting up.  It didn't seem to make him sleep any longer but I believe it is one of the reasons I did not quit bfing.  We did try it to make him sleep but he actually slept longer stretches after a nursing than after a bottle of formula.
  • I EP rather than breastfeed, but DS gets bottles of breast milk during the day and formula at night.  We just started doing this a little over a week ago and he does seem to sleep better at night with the formula.  It may just be a coincidence, though.  It's possible he would have started sleeping for longer stretches regardless.

  • we actually just started doing this. one of the feedings in the middle of the night ny husband gets up and gives her formula.I've noticed it is holder her 1 additional hour.
  • I did not BF I EP, but it did not matter if she had a bottle of BM or formula she still woke up to eat at the same times.

  • During the night I BF for 30 min and then top him off with formula.  If I don't we are feeding for 1-1 1/2 hours every 3 hours and I just can't handle that.  It does seem to help him sleep longer sometimes.  Usually during the day (when he is only nursed) he will sleep 2 1/2-3 hours.  During the night he goes 3-4 hours usually and one time went for nearly 5 hours.  We have had to supplement since day 2 or 3 though so I have never known anything different with him.

  • For a while we fed formula as his last feeding for the night and it made no difference in how long he slept.  He is now EBF and he will sleep anywhere from 5-8 hr. stretches.  IMO the key is making sure they have enough to eat before they go down.
  • I BF and top up with formula at each feeding... we've recently started just giving him formula once during the night. ?He sleeps the same amount as he did when he got BM and formula, but I am much happier because I get a longer stretch of sleep every night. ?It's heaven. ?
